Animals of Afghanistan
      #107271 - 12/06/08 07:27 PM

I'm currently working in Afghanistan and many of the people I know have been asking me if there is anything to hunt here (they obviously know I'm a big hunter). The problem is I have no idea. I assume that there are sheep and Ibex in the mountains along the Pakistani border but I'm not a sheep hunter and really don't know. Does anyone have a list of what game animals are found here? Anything living in the lowlands or just in the mountains?

Thanks,
Josh

Are you really asking if there is any game that a westerner can go wandering around the Afghan Pakistan border carrying a rifle looking for.

May I respectfully suggest, given that my gamekeeper pal has a brother in 42 commando just returned from the region, from all accounts that you may quickley find more to shoot at than you will be armed for.

From what I have read, there are some species of gazelles in the low lands. The ibex can be found at mid level hills as well as the higher mountains. There are plenty of birds such as sand grouse & francolins. Wild boar are a possibility.

It would be interesting to get more accurate info of the current situation.

Keep safe & get back home soon.

No Bramble. I have no intention of actually hunting anything here. Just curious what could be hunted if the situation was ever to change. I actually have quite a bit of experience hunting the two legged predators, hence why I'm here.

The reason I ask is, as I'm sure most of you know, civil conflict and war has decimated game in many countries. Not being familiar with the native game here I was wondering what affect the current hostilities could have on native game populations. That and just plain wondering what was here.

Thanks for the replies.
Josh

I was going to make similar comments to Bramble only of a more 'direct' nature. I would then have been justifiably accused of political incorrectness so I have refrained.

I do get a feeling that the whole current Afghanistan situation has been done before.....many times by different empires, but I digress.

I read an article recently about hunting in the country north of Afghansitan which offers challenging and unique opportunities. It could have been in one of the Hunt Reports on-line.

I'm pretty sure that I remember reading about Marco Polo sheep and Ibex hunting, presumably on the Tajikistan border. I imagine that the further west you go there would be a chance of gazelles and other sheep that you would also find in eastern Iran.

I think most baby boomers would like the oportunity to go to Afghanistan to shoot shoot varmints. Me thinks it would be more fun than shooting gophers around here. A .5 McMillan match rifle would be a good choice.

Dearmer.

I did wonder.

I thought for a moment that I had gone to sleep and woken up at AR
