404 question
      #87951 - 29/10/07 11:48 AM

What should one expect to pay for a 404 jeffery(not cz or new)rifle in hunting shape? Sorry if this seems like a rookie question; it is!

Not museum quality! A working man's rifle. That means on a budget!

Bushy,

Good question.

What is a "good working condition" bolt action in 404 worth?

Not a "beater" that has been dragged behind the truck and not a collector...... but a decent working rifle.....

Just a nice piece of history?

BTW, I believe the 404 cartridge is going to make a "come back" soon... IMHO

I would like to know what a working English rifle would cost in 375, 404 or 416. I have asked this question on 5 or 6 threads

Farhan,

Most members here are going to congratulate you wholeheartedly for finding nice guns at very good prices (especially the Woodward) and at the same time push you to post pictures of them here.

Do show them off - we all love pics of fine guns whenever they are posted.

Good hunting!

Bushy, Here in the USA good serviceable 404s on original German or English Mausers are very pricey
I would not expect you could touch one for less than about $2500 unless there was something wrong with it. For higher grade guns, the price could go WAY up.
But that's just my guess.

It's probably going to be less money for a CZ.
I see you don't really want a CZ. Why is that? (if you don't mine my asking?)

You can make a 404 out of several other actions, but the bottom metal has to be changed, and that necessitates a new stock too. So you have to make a semi-custom, or custom rifle to get one that way.
I was told that Ruger did a few a while back on #1s and on M-77s, but I don't know if that's true or not.
One other option is to buy a rifle in 458 Lott and rebarrel it. I think you will still have to widen the magazine a bit, and probably have to re-work the feed lips a bit too. But that is less work than making a whole new rifle from the action up.

I am not sure if 404 and budget go together

I have seen custom .404s go for as little as $2500, but generally you should expect to be in the $4K to $8K range (or up to 30k depending on who made it and how fancy it is) just like any well-made custom Mauser.

Another thought,
If you want 404 ballistics and you have a tight budget, check out a 416 Taylor.
The 404 uses .423" bullets and the 416 uses 416 bullets, but that's not much difference in the real world. The 416s are a lot easier to get, and many times, their cheaper too. The .007" smaller diameter is not going to be noticed by an animal.
Any 458, 300 mag and most 7mm mags can just be rebarrel and "your there"!
Nothing more to do other than sights and finish.

The Taylor is a reloaders cartridge however. Super easy to load, but you do have to load them.

Of course there's always the 416 Remington too, but it required a magnum length action.

I was going to have a 404 built on a CZ action. This has taken a turn and might not happen now. I am now exploring what 404 I might be able to buy in the $3000 to $3500 range. I have nothing against the CZ action, but if I could do this with an actual mauser action I think that it would be cool. I have looked at other calibers, but am pretty much set on the 404.

Well $3500 would get one made, I am sure. A very nice one too.

I purchased a 404 for $1600 with 100 rounds It was made on a Ruger 77 re barreled and finished by the late Scott Webb. It has express sights and hand engraved. I regularly shoot buffalo with it and find it an excellent outfit
