More chital stalking
      #106837 - 06/06/08 06:45 AM

This winter/spring I've been doing more trips to Lanai to stalk mouflon and chital/spotted deer.

I got a young mouflon ram in January, but though he made some nice curry I didn't have a camera handy...

I went back this past April and got a small chital buck, here are some photos.

The stag:

Spotted him early in the morning after hiking up a ridge. He was about 130 yards down in the bottom of a small valley feeding. One shot and he was down with the 30-06. Going down the cliffs and then packing him up and out was another matter... but after a few hours we packed him out.

Great pix and very interesting hunting.

What do they weigh?

9.3x57,

Thanks for the kind words. They are about whitetail sized. There are some monster bucks with huge antlers (30" or so) and big bodies, but I've not had any luck with them yet...

Hi Rod,

I'm in Hawaii, and the hunting takes place on Lanai which is one of the smallest populated islands in the state. There are both public and private land for hunting axis/chital deer and mouflon sheep. Good upland bird hunting as well (mostly African and Indian francolin, with pheasant and chukar). Public is a lottery, its cheap ($10 a tag) and self-guided. The private is both self-guided and also guided if you want. This particular hunt was private land and self-guided, just me and dad hunting.

There are other game on other islands with different regulations.

Pm if you want some contact details.
