700 nitro express SOLD
      #106632 - 04/06/08 09:03 AM

I see where one of the 700 nitro express J.L.Wilkens sold at Cabelas and the other one says sale pending. These have been for sale for about 3 years. Nice to see one sold. Somebody out there must like big bores as much as I do!

Okay, so when does someone build an 800 NE? Always room for one more and one bigger. There is a seat for every ass, as they say in the car biz, so why not build a still larger DR? Dave (my 577 Searcy works just fine for me, thank you, but I support the right of everyone to shoot and own what they want.)

A true 4 bore double is really a 1000 nitro express with a diameter of 1.052". That is the biggest double I am aware of. They out weigh a 700 by about 8 pounds and shoot a 2000 grain bullet instead of a 1000 grain bullet. I guess size is relative, like most things. I like shooting both of them.

I used to like the big stuff but my poor old body much prefers smaller stuff now.

I didn't ever get used to the headaches from the 600 or from the 460WB.

Keep in mind that they may NOT have sold....lots of times the owners take them off consignment and the store makes it Seem like they were sold so people think the inflated prices are not out of line and they can sell any gun you send them. It's a different bait and switch that happens all the time.Don't be surprized if you see them POP Up somewhere else in the not too distant future...

Good points Westley!

I am a fan of the 4 bore double rifle for sure,

even though I've never touched one. I think I

might even like to own a double 4 bore muzzle loader

with exposed hammers of course, that shoots round

balls. All 700's you can keep, no history or char-

acter in those. But a double 600NE or 577NE [slightly

less so] really is "the beginning and the end" to me.

Wouldn't a NE 4-bore be a cannon? More than enough recoil for me with BP!

Both of my 4 bores are modern cartridge guns, not black powder. The doubles shoot a loaded Brass cartridge. They are loaded with 116 grains of blue dot and push the 2000 grain bullet out at 1480 ft/sec., about 9700 ft.lbs of energy. Recoils at 26 lbs, is no worse than a 17 lb 700 nitro express.

Jabal,
Black powder generates more recoil than a charge of nitro that produces the same velocity in any given caliber or gauge.

Thanks for clarifying guys! I had an image in my mind of a 4-bore pushed to NE velocities (i.e. 2000gr at 2150fps...) ! I think someone on here would call that a brain fart!!

I suppose it would be fun to own a .700, but for me at least it would not be fun to shoot! The .600 proved to be beyond my recoil tolerance. And presently I am satisfied with a good thumping from the .500.

I think the main reason you won’t see a production 800NE or bigger is demand/practicality. I am not knocking the 2 bore or 4 bore ect but while they may be fun to shoot they are not practical for the majority of us to hunt with. This is the reason the .577 and .600NE didn’t become as popular in Africa and other places. They weigh considerably more than a 470 NE or 500NE that will kill anything.

Bill, I agree that the 4 bore and 700 nitro and the 2 bore are not practical to hunt with. But.... from a collectors standpoint and to just go out and blast things, aint nothing more fun for me anyway.

What you say is true today! But during the days of Sutherland, Rushby etc the .577 was the most popular amongst the elite ivory hunters! Mind you they did use their gun bearers!

Westly 375,

One of the 700 J.L.Wilkens actually sold and the other is back on the for sale list at Cabelas. An older gentleman purchased one of the 700 nitros and plans to shoot 1600 to 1800 ft/sec loads with it. I am surprised it has taken this long for one of them to sell. They are very nice guns, but I guess, heavy and impractical for most. I think they are great!

After checking with Cabelas, I stand corrected. Both of the 700 J.L. Wilkens have been sold, they just don't have the one removed off the gun library sight yet.
