Dons, et al?? Strength/Weakness Milled Clawmount Base??
      #105752 - 21/05/08 12:31 PM

OK, Mauser aficionados, a question.

The milled clawmount base... Just how much DOES it weaken the action?

Certainly it doesn't strengthen it. Do you take it into account when you work up loads for a rifle?

I am referring to the regular front round receiver ring milling, not the milled flat-top.

I've always wondered about it, but cannot remember hearing or reading of any blown actions except for PO Ackeley's murdered action which did of course blow there at the milled ring.

I have wondered the same myself - some claw bases are dovetailed pretty deep into the receiver ring - such as this:

I know... crappy photo!

My ony thought is that the barrel threads into the ring about halfway, so for a ring to crack or fail there would have to be a greater failure in the chamber or bolt face. IMHO
There is a lot of "meat" around the bottom bolt lug when the bolt is closed - perhaps that is enough(?)

9.3X57....they build these into 8x60 magnum bombe i would assume the pressures are high in that load i have never seen or heard of one failing...if you can find lester womacks book on oberndorf sporters he did some testing into the strenghts of the comm. actions ,he has past away now but i would often call him and have some discussions about oberndorf sporters and life....paul
