Dad's 30-40 Sauer
      #106295 - 29/05/08 04:49 PM

These photos are of a Sauer 16ga. boxlock that Dad converted to 30-40 Krag. He did the work about 1990 so I don't have any pictures of the actual work as I'm the picture nut. He threaded two new Springfield 03 bbls. that he had stashed back for years into the monoblock. He copied the stock of a S&K double he has that had at one time been a two bbl. set as it had a set trigger. but the other bbls. weren't with it when he got the gun. Just as fate would have it, a couple of years ago a friend of his about 70 miles away found a set of Sauer 16ga. bbls that Dad was able to fit to his action. He has never got around to filing the sights as he always shoots it with the scope or the peep sight.
the S&K double

the sauer

these last four were with a trash camera but I'll get some better ones

Dale,
I hope that my project looks half as good as that. I hope it resembles a rifle!

What a wonderful deer gun
Actually, the 30-40, when loaded with 200 or 220 grain bullets is a very good elk shell. It's not popular out here anymore, but I know a few old timers that still use them for their hunting. I hunted along side a man that used one a few years ago, and he did as well or better than anyone else on that trip. The 30-40 doesn't drive a big bullet fast enough to blow it up, so the penetration is superb.

One little tid-bit of info that' many hunters don't know:
The largest inland Grizzly ever killed in the Continental USA was killed right after the turn of the century in Montana with a 30-40 Kraig. 220 grain bullet.
It was a stock killer that turned man-killer. It became a local legend and source of fear up there. The locals named it "Old Mose". When it was finally killed they found over 40 other bullets in it, mostly from 44-40s and 38-40s, and a few from larger rifles, but none in the right place to kill. It was hung and weighed at a slaughter house, and in weighed in at 1006 pounds.

Dad is still working on what he says is his last, a 9.3x74r for me. I try to pay attention but I've been several years and have yet to attain a floorsweepers journeyman slot. :^)
I was so disgusted with the last four pictures I borrowed a good camera today. Can't afford a good camera as it would cut into gun money. Here are some better pics.

Dale, tell your father that He is to be commended for his tenacity and imagination in putting together such a neat firearm, (one of several you have showcased showing his talent!) There has to have been many hours of head scratching in contimplating such a project and aqquiring all the components but it all came together beautiful! Congratulations!!! Who is responsible for the wood work it also looks very nice.

Dale,

Your dad is an artist par excellence!

Was the chequering on the triggers his work or was it original on the Sauer?

Thanks for posting these pictures and good hunting!

Very nice rifle overall, but the pop-up peep sight is an extra touch. Your Dad does nice work.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the kind remarks about Dad. I think he is pretty tough. He did all the metal work but he had it blued and casecolored. He did all the woodwork except for the checkering but he checkered the triggers. He made the peep and I'm adding a couple of pictures of one in progress. I spoke with him tonight and he said he thought he had a couple of pictures of it back when he did it and would plunder around and try to find them for me. If he does, I'll scan and post them.

Man can your Pop scrape metal!!

What a peach!

I personally really like the individuality of the gun; caliber, double, peep sight, hog's back stock. Really interesting and like Steve says, TOTALLY practical, to-boot!

Really nice! I see he milled Ruger ring base slots, but they turned out much nicer than the rib I did. Looks like he has a real milling machine, not like my Taiwan $500 bench model.
