Drop Box magazine issues please help!!!!!!
      #106127 - 26/05/08 07:19 PM

G'day all,

I need some advice as I need to rebuild my Model 70 in 404.

Originally it was a 270 Win that was opened up and a 404 barrel screwed in (this is how I bought it). I have had it reinforced and bedded to prevent major damage to the stock.

What type of bottom metal should I get for this gun in order to hold four down?

Secondly should I get a synthetic or a laminate stock as I need something that is reliable and can take a few knocks. I am left handed so I can not just get the Mcmillan Safari stock as they do not seem to make it in left hand!

I know that this will not 'look' like a classic big bore but I am more concerned about functionality than aesthetics with this gun!

The first thing you need is a Brownells catalog (http://www.brownells.com/).

McMillan makes left-hand models of the Supergrade and the Classic (http://www.mcmfamily.com/).

WINCHESTER SUPERGRADE The Winchester Supergrade is an exact copy of the factory Supergrade, which has a classic straight comb with cheekpiece, and fine checkering. Its medium-width forend will accept up to and including a #5 barrel contour, which makes this an excellent choice for large caliber rifles. Available for all Winchester Model 70 actions in right and left hand.

WINCHESTER CLASSIC Winchester Classic is the stock used for the Winchester Winlite rifle. This stock has a classic comb, no cheekpiece, and is easy to handle. It is available for short or long Model 70 actions as well as featherweight or standard sporter barrel contours. It will accept up to a #5 contour. The stock has no checkering. Available in right and left hand.

If you are truly interested in a laminated stock, try Boyds (http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/).

Take care, Tom

McMillan will make a stock for you in left hand, as for wheter it will allow 4 rounds to fit the box with the 404 case I cannot say, I am not sure that the standard model 70 box will hold 4 rounds in any event, based on the .458 Safari grade on the .532 head diameter I think the box only held 3 rounds down.

You may well need to go to a magnum magazine box such as those made by Blackburn (assuming you can make contact with him and get a delivery date this millenium) or even Sunny Hill will make a drop box for the model 70 that should hold 4 rounds, if you did this it would then be worth your while contacting McMillan and asking what they can do for you stock wise and for inletting to your bottom metal.

Do you NEED a Left-Hand stock?

I am a lefty, and I merely modify Right-Hand wood stocks. I thin or adjust the comb to align my eye with the stock. Seems like if you have a good sound, well-bedded stock that is right handed, you could be money ahead by merely reshaping the existing stock to fit you. Just an idea.

Hey guys,

Thank you for your help at the moment I only hold two down in the magazine as it is only a Sporter LT originally!!

I was out in Arhnemland a fortnight ago after buffalo and I had to recharge my magazine before I went after him.

The action is LH and in order to get 4 down the trigger guard will be well below where it sits currently so I am in need of an LH stock.

I am lining up the Sunny Hill bottom metal at the moment. I have to get an import permit which is a bit unfortunate! I have a gunsmith in the NT who will mill me a box if th Sunny Hill unit will not hold em all down.

Stock is still an issue but I believe that getting a custom laminate may be the way to go to keep weight up a little bit.

Maybe even (gulp)parkerize it for total ease of cleaning.

Any further ideas pls put em fwd.

Stay Safe, MOG

Tim

If you are going to re-stock then go for a drop box, get this first so that your stocker can accomodate the profile into the stocking process. I have a left hand model 70 that has a blackburn box fitted mine is in .330 Dakota, a round based on the .404 case cut to 2.5" length, these boxes are excellent but can take many many months to materialise, the Sunny Hill are excellent to. I imagine you should get 4 in a drop box version, but check with them by e-mail prior to ordering, once you have your bottom metal you can then figure on the stocking, it is no point doing this the other way around as to cut a stock to final dimension and then find the box you get doesn't fit would make an expensive exercise.

I should think that with 4 rounds, plus possibly one in the chamber, the .404 would be just the ticket for the varmints you get up country!!

As for laminate being light, those I have seen have all made for heavy rifles. Again once you have selected you bottom metal it may be worth dropping McMillan a line to see what they can do for you on a left hand Model 70 safari stock. Even with this stock a little fitting will be in order, although sometimes described as "drop in" they usually require bedding, barrel channel opening out and even pillar bedding. a good rifle smith wil sort this no problem and you should end up with a very practical and tough rifle.

As for parkerising, with the climate you have it would make good sense, alternatively you could try a guncote finish, even in green or other cammo pattern, not very traditional but practical.

hope this helps

regards

jonathan

Actually, I think he's getting laminate so it will be heavy.

My fault I misread the quote and thought i read it as light, mea culpa!

I do not know the cost of gun work in Australia and what price a stock can be had in laminate made by a stocker down under, it may be that with waiting time and shipping cost/taxes that would accompany a McMillan that it may be cheaper in the long run to have a stock cutsom made at home. that way you would get the fit around the chosen metalwork.

Here in the UK labour costs for stock work are high indeed, with a reasonable piece of walnut you would get little change for a stocking job with a reputable maker of below £1,500 and from a London maker a minimum of two times that figure and possibly more, and thats for starters, select walnut can cost £1000 or more just for the blank

Hey guys,

Thank you for all your help. Does anyone have a contact no for Ted Blackburn? I could not find any of his products on Brownells or Midway's site.

The reason I need this is that I had to recharge my two shot magazine a month ago before I went to finish a buffalo beside a river bank where the foliage was thicker than I was comfortable with!!

Thanks again, MOG

Try Brown Precision as well. They show a nice dangerous game model that may fit your bill for around ±$500 US.

Attitionally, Sunny Hill Mfg. has several drop style magazines for Mod 70's.

Here is a link for Brownells also.:

Good luck...................Lee

Tim

I was about to reply but Wellplugger beat me to it.
Ii tried looking up Blackburn precision but cant find the thread I had for him, in any event Ted had got some serious health isuses when I last heard and was working hard to catch up with back orders, subsequently things had got more than a little dealyed.

The Sunny Hill products are very good, I have one on a Remington, but may be expensive to export to Oz. Best thing is to drop them a line with your exact requirements and let them quote you for what you need, IMHO they are well worth the money for the quality usually quality comes at a price.

I have never seen a Brown version but beleive their wotk is also top notch so worth a go there also

Jonathan

Thanks again gentlemen,
Sunny Hill looks to be the go as I can get it to Oz with an import permit. As you have pointed out Jonathan cost may be there but in the long run safety is paramount and having it right the first time is much cheaper in the long run!

I went out on Thursday and Friday with my dad into Arhnemland and I'm glad I have the 404, 338 Winnie's are good but a 404 is definately a good deal better on bulls on the paper bark.

Stay safe, MOG
