Here is my Coggie.
A very well used gun - perfect bore though.
In style, this is the archetypical English bolt gun to my mind...
My brother had his Gibbs stocked to this pattern - looks totally right. I really like this gun - it has soul to spare.

Huvius,

Is the Coggie marked 10.75x68 or .423? Another beautiful rifle! Thanks for posting here and very good hunting!

It is marked 10.75 X 68 - 58 Cordite 345 max.
Seems like a pretty hot load - nice bullet weight too.

Here are some more pictures of the Coggie.
Interestingly, this gun has some very nice appointments for what many think is a down-market maker. What I mean by that is that C&H are often looked at as a lower grade British firm, although in my experience, their action work is as good as any and certainly smoother than my .404 Jeff.
This particular gun has some nice features such as the express sights, barrel band sling swivel and front sight, horn forend tip, grip cap and butt plate as well as the latch style floorplate.
I am not sure if the use of horn was a more expensive option to steel or not at the time of this gun's birth, but is very cool all the same.

huvius, the rifle is without a doubt a type A mauser
although C+H did do a lot of there own custom work this one looks like it went from the oberndorf factory right to thier customer,Woodward,Manton,Vickers,Charles Heyer would also do this....Paul

Hi Huvius,

I agree with pjaln, the rifle looks exactly like the Type A Oberndorf's I have seen or owned, and has the extra thick floorplate too, by the look of it. The stock reeks factory Mauser too, right down to the checkering pattern and the execution of the borders. If you get your hands on John Speeds book all will be revealed.

The British gun trade often retailed rebadged Oberndorfs, and only rarely bettered the basic quality of these rifles. You have a nice little gem here, and a good shooter to. Nice on Wapiti.

The sling swivel base in the butt looks like the ones Cogswell fitted..........

Looks exactly like an A-Type Mauser. That would also explain the smooth feeding, etc. as Mauser lavished a bit of extra care on the A-Grades. C&H probably bought it from Mauser in the white, had their name engraved on the barrel, put it through the Proof House, and sold it.

Nice rifle!

Huvius, how much does it weigh?

Great rifle!

I've got to get a digital scale...
Feels really good in hand though.

Have you shot it?

Since the makers fitted a horn buttplate I'm sure there isn't any recoil...

I always wonder what stories these guns could tell if they could tell.

Huvius - THAT is a beautiful hunting rifle. It is plain, but shaped correctly for quick handling of a kicking ctg. and sighted for a rifleman. I like that rifle.
