Ruger 77 QD mounts??
      #10600 - 02/03/04 09:54 AM

Hi Guys:

I have a Ruger M77 458 Win Mag. that I picked up used at a pretty good price. It is the older model with the front shoulder sling stud in the forearm and it has the tang safety. It is missing the the scope mounts that came with it.

Who makes Quick Detachable mounts for this Ruger. I have QD's in Leupold and Talley on my other heavy hitters, but do they make them for a Ruger M77..???

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks... Jim P.

There shouldn't be any diffuculty in getting QD's for your older Ruger. I also have one and just haven't installed QD's on mine yet. I plan on getting one of those NECG rear sights to replace that sorry rear sight that's on the Ruger right now. In fact if I could find a good peep for it, I might just install that instead. I have QD's on all my RSM's.

Hi 475guy:

Since the rifle is not drilled and tapped and only has the cuts for the Ruger Rings... what QD mounts and rings did you use on yours..?? Will I have to drill and tap my receiver?

Any QD mount will fir as the older 458 is a shorter action than the new ones. Yes you'll have to drill and tap for the QD's. The d&t is for the base that the QD's will sit on. The other way is to machine dovetails on the receiver. Like I said, I haven't mounted mine yet as I'm up to my ass in crocs and alligators for the present. I think a good peep would be another alternative.

I had to go take care of some business. Thinking on this, forget about it. Just go straight to the peep sight as it would be simpler. That's what I think I'll do.

PAhunter,

I have a set of Warne QDs on my RSM 416 Rigby and am completely satisfied with them. They are moderately priced, heavy enough, and come back close enough to zero to be just fine for field accuracy.

Any gunsmith worth his salt can install a set of wings (handles) on regular Ruger rings...and those are hell for stout and return very well indeed...

Hi Guys:

Thanks for all the info. Hey 475 I think NECG makes a rear peep sight that fits on the back end on a double bridge receiver like the CZ. I know I saw it advertised in one of the rags. Maybe they have one that will fit a specific rear scope mount base also..??

Hey Ray: That's a good idea about adding the wing nuts to the regular Ruger rings. Hell I can even have my smitty make levers for the Ruger Rings like on Talley..!!!

Have to give that some thought.

Any body have an extra pair of Ruger Rings they want to sell?

Regards... Jim P.

If you're not in a hurry, I'll get to my mini-condo and dig out the Ruger rings I still have with my factory boxes. The only problem I've heard of was that the Ruger rings tend to be a little soft. I figure a couple of weeks before I head down that way. PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a set then.

Before you go to all that trouble, price out the Warne rings. They might not cost any more than having a smith convert the Rugers. Then, for the same price, you have a second set of rings.

Hi 475Guy:

Thank you very much I sent you a PM.

By the way check out the NECG web site below, click on Peep Sights from main menu.

NECG

They have Peep Sights that fit right on the back of a stock Ruger 77 for $85.00 fully adjustable for height and windage. It is displayed when you go to the web site.

They are also now a distributor for Heym Double Rifles.... cool...

Regards... Jim P.

For $50 + shipping I will send you a set of Medium height Ruger mounts with "wing" nuts. I cannot use them with my Ziess 3-9 scoepe as they are not high enough to get the scope clear of the 1/4 rib.

Scott

I will never use Warne rings on a dangerous game rifle again unless the gun is a M-70 or some make that the levers can be placed on the off side from the bolt...

They will get you into real trouble with the rings on the right side or bolt side as recoil will flip them around and block the bolt uplift...that is on a Mauser and a Ruger where the bolt release catches on the lever, requiring bolt side mounting.

I suppose the levers could be modified but thats an added expense or perhaps a much heavier spring could be used to hold the levers in place....I used to use only Warnes until I near got stomped with a blocked bolt...I sold them all and replaced them all with Talleys.
