I have never come across a book. I am personally not a gunsmith but could be called a "good tinkerer" and have successfully disassembled 3 of my drilling for a good cleaning. Two were side locks and one box lock. Its not really difficult but the key is using the RIGHT tool (screwdrivers) with the right amount of pressure so you dont bugger them (which is easy to do and a unforgettable mistake).

My Simson boxlock drillings, also have to be cocked in order to remove the butt.

Leave them cocked before removing the stock. It will save you a lot of frustration!

How are you going to refinish it? I am curious as i have a stock I need to as well. How was the original finish done? I am guessing tongue oil or BLO?

Before doing anything to the stock, dessicate the oil accumulated over many years. Put a strong light bulb close and a drip can under the stock. You should do this to the area around the receiver, as it soaks up a lot of oil over years. DON'T let it drip onto the light bulb!!! Have the stock pointed down.
