On my chronograph, all things equal, particularly barrel length the 9.3x64 out distances the 9.3x62 with a whole 150 FPS average...mostly in the 100 fps catagory...With a 300 or 320 gr. bullet that 150 FPS may or may not be substaintial..up to you to make that call.

Based on that I shoot the 9.3x62 these days, however the 9.3x64 is one hell of a cartridge and has proven itself with proper bullets as the most all around cartridge in the world...

Since it will feed and function in about any std. action then why not take advantage of its slightly more velocity, but I would not run down and trade off a good 9.3x62 for that...and I am not sure just how long that Hornegber brass will be available, the 9.3x64 seems to come and go and thats a shame, its a great round and needs a fair shake.

rob, I had accessed stevespages.com and saw that the X64 is indeed a different cartridge than the X62. Evidently, there is about 200-300 f/s difference between them. I guess with the proper magazine length and slightly longer throat, this could be a hell of a thumper with 320 gr bullets.

RAY

I know you maintain that the 9,3x62 needs a longer barrel...26" or so. What will I loose by having a nicely contoured and sighted 8x57js barrel of 23" bored and chambered to 9,3x62?

Will I loose significant velocity...how about a slightly faster powder? Would that help compensate a bit? What pitch should I have done? I was thinking around 1 in 13...?

While I've had a lot of experience with a 35 Whalen and the 9,3x74r, I know little about reloading for the 9,3x62.

Hehp me...hehp me...Dr. Ray!

Luv2Safari:

I suspect you aren't going to get a huge amount of velocity by using a 26 inch barrel over a 24 or a 23 for a 9.3x62.

Basically, the 9.3x62 is a 35 Whelen opened up from .358 to .366. Given the greater expansion ratio, a 23 or 24 incher should be fine. I did some simulations a while back in Quickload and determined that 23 to 24 inches is the optium length for a 35 Whelen. So, clearly, 23 inches would work just fine for the 9.3x62. However, if velocity is your goal and you are counting fps, then every inch does make a difference.

I didn't find that faster powders offset velocity for a shorter barrel length, but I did find that different powders produced the highest velocity for a given bullet regardless of barrel length.

A twist rate of 1:12 or 1:14 should be fine for the 9.3x62. I personally like faster twist rates; if I had one built, I would opt for a 1:12, but that is just my opinion. If you are really into cast bullets, you might look at a 1:16 for your bullet.

If you know a lot about reloading the 35 Whelen, then you have an excellent idea of the 9.3x62, since it is only a bit bigger. You only need to learn the new bullets and their application.

The 9,3x62 is basicly not ! a 35 Wheelen!
You can use 35 Wheelen brass to form a 9,3x62 but it is not its base.

As I will be loading the Woodleigh 320s in the 9,3x62, I think I might be better off with the 1:12 pitch. I'm not as concerned with velocity as accuracy, but I like any rifle to live up to it's full potential.

For N. America I think the Speer 270s are just fine. I use them in the 9,3x74r and I use...and like very much...the Woodleigh 286s in both softs and solids.

Since the standard Norma factory specs are almost exactly the same between the x62 and x74r, I will be familiar with trajectory of the two calibers.

I have no real need for the x62, with my Whalen and all, but have always wanted the fantastic 9,3x62 of legend. I think it will be the consumate woods rifle in NW Montana with the 23" barrel and a perfect bushveldt rifle.

Luv2safari,
All my 9.3s have been 1x14 twist as thats about all they come in with perhaps an exception with Krieger.

The 1x14 will handle 250 to 320 just fine and the 320 RN have been super accurate in all my Lothar walther barrels.

The NOrma or Lapua 9.3 brass has an average of 4 ot 5% more loading density than converted 06 or 35 Whelen brass...

Ray,

I have about 250 35 Whalen brass...100 of them still virgins...

What do you think about using them for the x62? All are Remington...

I'll be going through Twin Falls in about 3-4 weeks on my way to Libby, MT and will drop off the 320 PPs if this isn't too late...

Luv2safari,
It will work, but you could just sell them and buy 9.3 if you want the full potential of a 9.3x62...either will work.
I should be here when you come through..

475 Guy,
I get 2552 FPS with a 286 gr. bullet in my 9.3x62 and 2700 FPS in my old 9.3x64 with handloads, both are max in 26" barrels and chronographed, so the difference is not quite that dramatic in my guns. Perhaps in shorter barrels it would be...

Ray, that's still a sizeable bit of horsepower for that size bore. It is something for me to think about for another project down the road.
