Here is a Cogswell & Harrison in 318WR,nothing fancy just something you don't see often.

Would anyone know what such a rifle would cost? I am trying to get a education on the subject before getting a couple of classic English rifles & DRs.

I have one almost identical to yours. Mine has a loop on the butt like the barrel and it has a round knob bolt. Same sights and style stock. I picked up mine off of Auction Arms a couple of months ago.

WVFred,

That's a nice "using" Coggie. Somehow the brand has not become popular outside the former colonies but it was well loved in India and many Coggies turn up there from time to time.

Could some one please help? I have now identified a Rigby take-down barrels in 350 & 440 (is that a Rigby caliber? I thought they did 416 & 450.) The gunsmith says there is some surface rust because it was not stored properly & he will clean it up. I haven't seen the rifle yet & need to drive 5 hours to see it & then drive back. I am told that the condition is good but not great). What would be a fair price for such a rifle? I am very tempted to buy it

but do not want to make the mistake of paying too much. I am not even sure if it is for sale but one can always try. Any help would be appreciated.

Nakihunter,

There is no easy answer to how to select a gun and what price to pay for it. The latest Blue Book or the Standard Catalog of Firearms (available from Amazon) would give you an indicative price for buying from the US though dealing through a known dealer or getting the help of an experienced friend who is willing to come along with you would be the best option.

If a 5 hour drive is a problem, then it might be easier to fly to the town where the gunsmith is located? Surely that can't be all that expensive considering that a gun is going to cost a good amount of money?

That's a very nice looking WR rifle. As far as load suggestions, I suggest you load it on a UPS truck and send it to me :-)

I would suggest that you please post the load request in the Reloading forums, as you are now a registered member here. You can see them above this one after logging in and you might even find some older posts on loading for the 318 W-R. It is a popular round with many of our members absolutely in love with it.

Actually, this gun would feel right at home with my "old boys".
Kind of like old soldiers getting together at the VFW.
Really, the .318 is a beauty for North American game. Congrats on a great find! Love that Westley front sight.

Here's a photo of Fred & his 318WR. Last week he & I met out at Tom's farm for a little shoot and He brought C&H for me to shoot. It shot so well the price went up 15%.

I own a very similar rifle. Mine is a Type T 218 rifle completed by Cogswell & Harrison on 18th February 1931, but not collected until June 23rd 1938. It cost 12 guineas. The rifle spent alot of time in Central Africa, until the owner moved to NZ where it was auctioned off.

Mine has the same bolt knob, a steel buttplate, but the grip is capped in horn with a kidney shaped cheekpiece. It is a plain magazine rifle made for work, but cycles nicely and really has been loved- the bore is mint and the bluing very good indeed, and original.

This rifle is chambered for the 9.5 M/S cartridge, and has the same sights as yours.

They may not be a Westley Richards, but they are nice enough in their own right and a little different.

Mine will be for sale in the future, I want to find a GOOD home for it- where it will be put to good use hunting, but taken care of. Finding a good home for it is more important than the money. I have a few such rifles so it is surplus to my needs.
