375 NE Gibbs Sporter project update
      #104763 - 12/05/08 12:28 AM

Everyone,

Here is an update on the restoration project that I started a long time ago. Gibbs 375NE. Attached are photos of how I received the rifle and its current condition. Patina that only a 100 years or so can produce. I saw tremendous potential. With about 20 minutes of draw filing and sanding it was good as new. The blank used is the third one down. The project is almost complete. Just need to put on the butt plate and grip cap, rear sight blade, final sand and blue. Its 95% complete. Another hour or so of sanding/finishing and she will be ready to see action once again in Africa.

Dave,

Thanks for the kind words. I think its already found a new home before I posted these photos. Im sure I will have regrets down the road till someone wants me to work on their special restoration project.

You've done a great job so far - that is a rifle that would fill all my needs in a big game rifle for hunting or guiding, Corbin. Good job - very nice rifle and great calibre.
: Do you have the loading clips for it?

Great job & nice rifle! Is the cartridge the same as the 9.5X57MS or is it an older one? What was the condition of the bore? Did you polish the bore or lap it?

I wish I had the skills to restock my 1910 MS! How does one go about inletting such a tang even if I started with a semi inletted stock? I have worked on Mod 70 Winchester & Mauser 98s with reasonable success. I would appreciate any help.

Daryl,

Yes I have clips. They are not hard to come by if you know where to look
The clips are all the same for the 92 Dutch actions. 6.5x53R, 303, 375NE all work. Basically any cartridge with a head size similar to the 303 will work. 30-40 Krag with just a small bit of modification, 405win, etc. Imagine one of these in a shortened 405win.
These actions feed like butter. I like them VERY much and wish I had a pile of them for custom rifle projects. I especially like the way the magazine box sticks out below the wood line. And the coolest thing is when the final round is chambered the clip falls out the bottom ready to be recharged after the final round is fired. Good stuff indeed!!!

Nakihunter,

The 375 2.5" is not the same round as the 9.5MS. The 9.5 was designed to function out of a rotary magazine and is rimless. The 375NE has a rim. As far as bore condition its been shot and is worn but has lots of life left and hopefully this rifle will go back to Africa and serve at least one more tour of duty.

As far as inletting a tang or anything for that matter its pretty straight forward. I use two action guide screws and this guides the barreled action down into the two holes I drill into the blank. The bottom of the metal has inletting black brushed on. I then press the metal into the wood and remove. Anywhere the inletting black shows on the wood is where wood needs to be removed. Initial cuts can be pretty large to remove the bulk of the wood. The deeper you get and closer to the center line of the bore you get the less material you start taking out. The goal is to have the imaginary centerline of the receiver and bore to be inletted down to within about a 64th or so to the top of the stock line. Then come in from the bottom and using the guide pins that are screwed to the receiver, guide the bottom metal down and repeat the process. Depending on what kind of action it is I will either inlet the barreled action first or bottom metal first and what kind of mood Im in:)) If using a blank you need to determine if its symetrical in layout and figure on both sides. If no then you need to favor one side or the other and draw your center line. If a right handed stock is being made then true the right side on a joiner. Then lay on a flat surface plate or flat plate of glass and scribe your center line. Next remove everything that does not look like a stock. Well not really. Then layout the barreled action and draw out the pattern. Adjust accordingly fore and aft as necessary. Drill the action screw holes and start inletting. One way is with a hand held router to cut the barrel channel and rough out the action area. This is the way I was taught in gunsmithing school and it works great. Just have to have steady hands with the router. Let the chips fly. Once everything is inletted then you can cut out the profile and disc sand to the out line of the stock. Again put the center line back on the stock all the way around. Then you will want to start removing wood in a series of flats which get smaller and smaller with each series of flats. The only way to make a perfectly symetrical stock is to start from a blank!

Corbin,

That is some fantastic work! I hate the lucky devil who owns that rifle!

Very good hunting and do post pictures of any other projects that you take up.

Corbin, Thanks for the information. I'll try & follow as closely as possible. What do I do for the take down model 1910MS? It does not have action screws!! The trigger guard & the tang peep sight just screw on the wood & the barreled action just hooks under the tang peep at the back, clips on to the trigger guard in the middle and is pinned by the barrel band at the fore-end. It may be a hard task to even source a semi inleted stock. Wenig want an old stock to duplicate since the rifle has no action screws to bolt to the stock.

This is going to be a challenging project. Who ever did the restocking of my rifle didn't understand the effects of recoil & the tang / wrist area has a crack which has been repaired with two cross dowels.

Really great gun, caliber and 'smith!!

Great job, Corbin, and thanks for sharing your progress.

I've never own one, but you are right, working the action on one of those guns feels almost like something is missing, which of course, something is missing...friction!

Corbin - here are 3 Gibbs rifles. All are .256's, the bottom 2 being Styers. The bottom rifle appears to be appropriate in style and sighting. These were copied from a magazine and appear to be reversed photos.

Corbin,
Looks nice, you'll enjoy it when it's done. I formed my cases from Hornady 405s, nice brass. I have to thin the rims and turn down the rim diameter but they make a good case. I went light with the bullets and use 220 gr Hornadys rather than 270s, just easier on my shoulder, wallet and the rifle. At a shade over 2100 fps they shoot to the sights and the one deer I've taken with that load dropped on the spot. Also for future reference some Bondo would have fixed up that old stock and with a coat of camo spay paint you wouldn't know the difference.
Let me know next time you're in town, need to show you the latest work on the 425 WR.
Best

Paul,

Might start a run on these. Hmmmm. Sure wish I had a bunch of beater military Dutch rifles to convert to sporters. I have the wood for a killer 3 gun set. 6.5x53R, 303 and 375 Flanged. I would do all new barrels to the original profile.

Corbin,
That sounds like a great 3 rifle set. Great job saving a classic little rifle.
