404 Jeffery or 505 Gibbs?
      #104589 - 09/05/08 06:37 AM

I was talking with my local firearms dealer, and he can finally order the CZ 550 Safari Classics, and the price is quite reasonable. So now I'm stuck on which Caliber to get, its available in 505 Gibbs, 500 Jeffery, 404 Jeffery, 450 Rigby, and 300 H&H Mag, but I'm really interested in 404 and 505, they just intrigue me.

So heres the details normally needed when advice is asked of caliber choices:

Rifle Use: Mostly, I just want one, I'm a huge CZ Fan, and have always wanted a safari classic, so now that its available for order at my local dealer, I'm getting one.

Other rifles: I already have a Brno ZKK 602 in 375 H&H, as well as a Win Mod 70 in 458 Lott, and various small bore rifles for deer and such.

Ammo costs and availably: I handload, and have no problem ordering brass for any of the calibers, so thats not an issue.

So what do you guys reccommend? Which caliber would you be happier with? Would the 404 Jeff be to close to the 375 and 458, that is, would I be overlapping usefulness?

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Trev.

Given what you already have, the 505 is subtantially more powerful and 'diverse' as compared to the 404. Answering the question as posed, the 505 is the clear choice. Dave

The .404 clearly falls in between the two rifles that you already have with standard 400 grain bullets. The distinction is blurred further if you load woodleigh 350gr loads in .375 bringing it close to the 400gr .404 or if you load 450gr woodleighs in the .404 it moves closer to the 500gr .458 Lott. Having said that, the 550gr woodleighs move the .458 Lott into .505 territory...

Another way of looking at it depends what you plan to hunt. A .404 hits a buffalo much harder than a .375. However, Ian Nyschens was of the opinion that a .404 was not heavy enough for elephant in thick bush. He might have changed his mind if the 450gr woodleighs were available though, given that he opted for a .450NE.

If elephant are not on your list, a .404 with its .423” bullets in either 400gr or better 450gr loads should offer all you could ever want in a buffalo rifle. But then that could make your Lott redundant! On the other hand, if you wanted to go for the 505, your Lott would also be redundant, so you have a real dilemma! A nice position to be in! Given the rifles you already have and the ones you are considering, you are never going to be in the position of not having a suitable rifle for whatever you need to hunt.

Seriously, you can’t go wrong with either, even considering what you already have. So I agree and disagree with Dave If it was me, I’d keep the .375, get the .404 and lose the Lott. I’d then hold out for DR in either .500/.450 regulated with 550gr woodleighs or a .500NE

I don't know that we really disagree. I was assuming he would keep the existing rifles and add one or the other of the 404 or 505. Your analysis is correct, although I'd keep the 375 and get rid of the Lott but replace it with the 505. The 375 should provide all the 'mid range' he needs and the 505 will deal with buf and elephant or anything else that walks. The 404 is still, IMHO, not that much 'more gun' than a 375 to warrant the change. Dave

Excellent advise guys, I guess I never included what I wanted to hunt, I won't be getting rid of any rifles, just adding, heres my list of must hunt animals:

North American Deer - for that I have my 7x57 Mauser
North American Elk and Moose - Thats why I bought the 375 H&H
North American Grizzly Bear - 375 or 458?
Cape Buffalo - My dream hunt, I have no desire to hunt elephant, but the mighty buffalo is what I'm saving my pennies for.

On a side note I considered getting the Safari Classic in 300 H&H for a mid range gun, but I thought it was to close to the 375, perhaps given the info I should reconsider...

You are already set for anything that you want to hunt, so it really comes down to which lights your fire more. Personally I opted for the 404 and am leaving on the 25th to pursue buffalo in Botswana.
