Built Double Rifles in 45-70 How About 45-90 ; or .45-120 ?
      #104080 - 02/05/08 11:38 AM

Hi;
I've heard of projects of Double S X S Rifles being built
in .45-70 cal .; What's the feasibility of one being built
in either a .45-90; or the .45-120 cartridge?

I own a newer Marlin Lever Action in .45-70 and I like the
cartridge very much .

Would a .45-120 be feasible if built on an existing Nitro S x S external
Side Hammer Double Rifle Action ? Would the .45-120 cartridge be manageable
or would it be too much of an ''ASS - BUSTER '' ?

Could the action would handle it.

What are your thoughts ?

Thanks !

Mike

This is intuitive on my part, but it seems to me that inasmuch as the case head of the .45-120 is the same size as that of the .45-70, if the two cartridges are loaded to the same pressure, the back thrust on the action will be the same, and any action that is appropriate for the .45-70 will be equally appropriate for the .45-120.

Built on a Nitro SXS? - The .45 3 1/2" would deliver similar ballistics as the .450 Nitro Express if loaded to identical pressures as the Nitro round. The .45/70 can not match those ballistics at safe pressure.

I was assuming we were discussing a BP action, which is not a given for a hammer gun I know, but it didn't occur to me that someone would be asking if a Nitro proofed action would be adequate for a BP cartridge like the .45-120. I see now that I overlooked the "Nitro" in the question.
