Purchased our first Double Rifle - .470 NE
      #10382 - 29/02/04 02:43 AM

Here are some Pictures, click on the link and go to GUNS.

Heym .470 Nitro Express

Yesterday my Dad purchased a brand new Heym Model 55B O/U .470 Nitro Express, his first Double Rifle! We have been debating for a few months whether or not to purchase this double rifle. The gun smith was selling the gun at dealers cost, just under $8000 CDN. I was told by another Gun Smith in the US that this exact gun would sell for $10-$12,000 US, so I can't say it was a bad choice. My Dad and I are very excited about the purchase and can't wait to go to the shooting range and give our shoulders a beating . We are currently looking for a .470 Die and Brass so we can load our own ammunition but having a little difficulty locating some. Although we did find Federal Ammunition at $250/box (CDN). We will probably buy one box for now so that we can go test the rifle and then reload with that brass. However eventualy we would like to get the die and brass so we can reload. If anyone knows of a gun smith or web site who carries this caliber die and brass, we would appreciate any help.

Our next Double Rifle might be coming within a month or two. A Franz Sodia .458 WM with a second barrel .300 WM. This gun is beautiful and can't wait to go see it in person.

Regards
Paul

Paul

Congratulations on the new rifle. Try Huntingtons at http://www.huntingtons.com/

As for the Sodia, don't go down the rimless road. The reason that these beautiful rifles are so affordable is because of that. You can get them rechambered to 450 3.25 and 450 #2 but I'm not sure of the 375.

There was a nice high grade Krieghoff in 458 and 375 around here for a couple of years and went, finally, for about $9,000. Less than half of the original cost.

Why not go with the Franz Sodia? What problems are there with the rimless? Thanks!

The extractors might jump the rim under extreme conditions. Rimless cases are for bolt action guns...
Rimmed cases are for SS and DR...and bolt action guns.

Most rimless loadings are designed for bolt guns and churn up so much pressure that they're not good for DRs.

That was a great purchase on the 470!

The lease expensive source of new cases that I've found is:

http://www.bellammo.com/caseprices.htm

Very good quality!

New RCBS dies are available from Huntington's, but they are EXPENSIVE! You might try:

http://www.chh4d.com

Their dies are about half of the price of RCBS dies and make fine ammo. They may require just a little cleanup.

Woodleigh bullets are available from Huntington's or from Midway.

Ballisti-Cast makes a 500 grain 0.476" FPGC bullet mold that shoots well in .470 NE.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the information. I'll be purchasing the brass in the near future. Anyone know of a good reloading source for the .470NE? I just bought the SWIFT Bullet Company Ballistic and Reloading book....any other good ones?

Thanks
Paul

Be sure and get "SHOOTING THE BRITISH DOUBLE RIFLE" by Graeme Wright. I think you can get a copy from www.huntingtons.com

It's the definitive book (so far) on loading for and shooting double rifles. Good "how to" information. I'm relatively new to double rifles also and I found the information to be very valuable. Highly recommended.

I orderd my set of dies, bullets, loading blocks etc in 470 NE last week from Huntingtons and they had it all in stock. Midway says they need more than 90 days for dies!!!

Are Norma Cases good? I can get them for the .470NE cheaper than the Bell Cases. What other Manufactuers have good quality cases?

Thanks
Paul

Norma has a good reutation and thats the only brass I use (produced here in Sweden). Havent used them yet for the 470 but in 375 H&H, 300 Wm, 7x57R, 6,5X55 with no problems so far. Also bought 100 pcs that will do the work in the 470 NE.

Paul

I checked out your photos. A very nice U/O in .470.

In an U/O double I like that Germanic styling. In a S/S I prefer the English styling. Good choice.

It should be a fine rifle to use and provide enjoyable hunting.

I'm so excited about this gun...especially since its our first Double Rifle. This Sunday we are going to the shooting range so hopefully the weather is good!

Just wondering...with such a caliber, is there a way I should properly stand when shooting this gun to help with the recoil?

Thanks!

Paul

I use the Elmer Keith method with hard kickers.
Lean into the rifle bending your front leg a little.
Pull the rifle into you shoulder with your trigger finger hand hard. Grip the forend tight and pull back with it hard too. Be sure your front arm is as directly under the rifle as possible. Place your face on the stock hard. This way the rifle and your upper body [including your head] recoil as a unit. Your shoulder should not collapse.

Thanks! I'll remember that tip. I guess I'm a little bit nervous but excited at the same time. I remember the first time I shot my .340 Weatherby Mag (12 years old) I was so afraid that the scope was going to hit my head from the recoil. I sat down, placed the gun firmly in my shoulder and pulled that trigger...didnt care about aiming BOOOOM...the .340WM sounded like a canon. I barely noticed the recoil due to the excitement. I was no longer nervous. After a few shots on the bench, I stood up and took 3 shots free standing at 200 yards and had all 3 shots within 10 inches of which 1 was placed 1 inch off the bullseye...not bad considering I had no practice with high powered rifles.

I think after I take the first shot with the .470NE I'll do fine. Practice makes perfect!

Paul
