Spring Bear?
      #103217 - 22/04/08 11:07 PM

Anybody else (except me) going bear hunting this spring? If so when and were? I am going back up to the James Bay gateway again in Northern Quebec the first week of June. I'll be bowhunting again and will take the first mature bear to show up.

Plan to go out here in Montana as soon as they start showing up--we have been hit with a cold snap--8 below F yesterday morning..which is really cold for this time of year--it is suppose to warm up a great deal by this weekend --at which time I am going out chasing turkeys with my bow..

Bummer deal on the cold weather, it has been nice here for awhile but it took two weeks to melt 12 feet of snow. Most of it is gone now and my archery targets were finally visible two days ago.

Kinda like to take a bear with my new-to-me Husky 16 bore with straight rifled right-hand tube. My machinist friend cannot eat beef or pork but loves black bear and other wild meats.

Daryl,

Seems you would be in prime bear country there? Do you get much color phase?

We are in a total conundrum here, too.

Snow Saturday. Snow Sunday. Snow yesterday. Snow tomorrow.

Snow.

Most bear are still locked up tight at elevation deep in snow. Season started 15 April, and my son and I had plans to bait, but now we have to start all over and find a new area. Dunno what'll happen before season ends. I may get out and scout a bit tomorrow.

9.3- our's are still underground too. There's still well over 3' of snow in the bush with temps down to 15F at night.
: I was out to the Black Powder range on Sunday to check some new sights on my flinter. There was a rock-hard crust on 2' of snow, out in the open. The bench for sighting is 1/2 way under snow still, yet the open big-bore range above is clear except behind the berms. Supposed to go to 60F this weekend - maybe. That will be perfect for shooting, nice and warm.

The Peovince of Ontario (in it's infinite wisdom) cancelled Spring bear hunting some years ago. We try to mix in a bear hunt when we go for deer and moose now in the fall, but have not had success as we arent up at the camp to properly bait in advance of our getting there.

The area we have for hunting and the surrounding towns are now infested with problem bears and there isnt any sign of that slowing down if the Spring hunt ban remains in place.

A quick tale,,, we were sitting on the dock on a late July day ( having an ale or four) on Gull Lake when I looked over at the neighboring dock no more than 75 meteres away to see a sow and cub strolling along like they owned the place ... it was 2 in the afternoon and they may have been looking for some unattended sun screen. I whistled and yelled and all they did was look up and carry on, on their merry way.

If you ask the ministry,,, there's no bear problem though.
It keeps a great deal of conservation officers employed setting live traps and re locating them though.

Maybe we should try baiting with some 25 block cream in the fall.

We've got a few around here too. This is a picture of my car port and garbage can. I've just picked up the gargabe and loaded it into the can - again. Note the tracks in the snow.

Daryl:
Who can't say more than your photos and total understatement. I'm not in to "broke back mountain" or anything, but I think I'm liking you more each post! :-} .
Reminds me of my early days in Alaska. Early '70s. Black bear in the spring before they got into the gut piles, winter kill and someones garbage. Fish in the Summer. Birds and marmot in the summer (until the spruce hens get to the cranberries!), moose in the fall, and rabbits in the winter.
Oh, the life. Could it ever be again?
