Roan in RSA?

So I'll try and keep this story as short as possible but I happened across an interesting opportunity over the last few days. In planning a plains game hunt in RSA, I came upon an outfitter's website who had Roan listed - POA. I e-mailed an inquiry and got a response telling me he had access to a "PAC" Roan bull for $7000. This would be on a ranch setting ( ~ 3000 ha.) and the rancher really wants this specific animal removed. Apparently, it is causing major head-aches - injuring and killing other animals on the property and, generally, being a big PITA. He forwarded some photos to me and this bull is not a trophy animal - horns pretty worn but is very big-bodied and fully mature. My question is: Is this worth it, or at least exploring further? Hunting Roan in RSA is incredibly expensive with trophy fees pushing $15,000 for an SCI/Rowland Ward level specimen. Even representative animals run close to $10,000. On the other hand, while Roan can be hunted in other countries for a lot lower trophy fee, you have to shell out an arm and a leg just to be allowed to hunt them.

To me, the best place for a Roan is western Africa - Burkina Faso, Benin, etc. I plan on getting there someday but that's a ways off and RSA is much more accessible to me right now. I had some other animals factored in for my original hunt but that $7K would pretty much eliminate most of those. (I may have enough money budgeted for a couple of others as this outfitter has very reasonable trophy fees otherwise.)

Anyway, I'd like to respond to this guy fairly soon but thought I'd run this scenario by the membership to see what other people's opinions are first.

Hi Pinotguy - I can't give a definitive answer as to whether its worth the cost, but here's my oppinion for what its worth. There are a few roan sub-species and you are correct that Burkina Faso and Benin, but also CAR, Cameroon, etc., offer excellent hunting for 'western roan' in unfenced hunting concessions. However roan also exist naturally in east and southern Africa as well. The roan offered in SA is undoubtedly a game farm animal that has turned aggressive. At the end of the day, its up to you if you want to hunt a fenced or unfenced area for your roan, but western africa is not your only option for the latter. Hope that helps a bit.

I found allegedly "free range" roan in Namibia--while I am fully aware there are ranches over there as well--in states the above--having said that--the price is around $8000 which I think is very competitive--plan to use this as a side trip when I got over next year to hammer my elephant..

I think you will have better spent your money in either central or western Africa for a roan.

Something smells slightly wrong here....... Usually the only time an antelope behaves like that is if it's been hand reared or perhaps has rabies or some other disease that makes it unusually aggressive............ Alternatively, it might just be that the animal is just very old and the owner thinks he's about ready to die of old age, and he wants someone to shoot it before that happens to give him an income from the animal.

The other issue you need to address is if 'PAC' means you can't have the trophy. - Which is usually part of the deal on a PAC animal. Turning it the other way round, if you can have the trophy, why is it a PAC animal and not a discounted trophy animal?

My advice would be that you clarify this a bit more........

Personally, I wouldn't touch an animal/offer like that with a barge pole, but it's your hunt, your money and your decision.
