Goat hunting in the Northern Flinders Ranges
      #815 - 11/01/03 04:17 PM

I saw on the Hunting Forum pictures of moose hunting in Southern Sweden. So green and WET. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing the sort of country Australian hunting offers. Very different.

These are photographs of an area in the Northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia, not far from where I used to hunt goats.

The hunting there is rugged and in summer very hot. The goat trophy quality is not spectacular but the countryside can be.

What other critters do you get in the Flinders Ranges? I've heard there are pigs but it doesnt look like pig country to me. How about Camels, Donkies, Brumbies. Foxes and Rabbits I spose. Whats in the region?

About the moose photos, our hunt starts the second monday in october and then it's mostly cold, wet and windy so you must love to stand still at the same place for about 3 or 4 hours. We have a draw to decide positions and my first was not a hit, close to a smal road and far from the dogs so I must say I was glad that the hunt was over quick since it also rained a lot and I figured I would hav eno chance to see any moose.

Marty

The other game in the area is mainly foxes, rabbits, and roos, inaddition to the occasional unwanted wild dog or dingo on the sheep stations. There are some donkeys and on the plains North of the mountain ranges some camels. Horses as well except they are not usually shot.

Christer

Never heard of Benbonyathe Hill. This area is in the far North of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. The station I hunted neighboured the property where the photographs were taken.

I found the Flinders on the map and Benbonyathe Hill is a peak 1058 meters high in the far north of the Flinders.

Loks like nice country but I must say I enjoy more bushes and trees in terrain like that. It reminds me of the Waterberg mountains.

Frederik

I thought those pictures did have lots of trees!

****

When I started goat hunting I used a .222 Remington 788 with 55 gr Nosler Solid Bases. Handles most feral goats OK, but I was getting too many wounded goats and had to follow too many up. And when its hot a follow up up and down mountains is a major pain. Then I shot a reasonably sized trophy billie and lost him in the bush. Searched for him but never found him.

Stuff that. Upgraded to a .30-06 with 150 gr Nosler Solid Base HPs and pure murder on these light animals. Any animal hit reasonably dropped very quickly and even if the odd gut-shot occurred the animal usually died before I could get to it Note this isn't shooting one or two, sometimes we tried to take out the entire herd for the grazier.

The best calibre is probably a 6mm to a 270 with one of my favourites being the 6.5x55mm.

Benbonyathe Hill. Yes very good. Checked it out using an online map. That is right in the region where the photographs are. Except not in the Park. Outside of it.

Yes I do have a 6.5x55 Mauser 96 (38). It is still largely the military rifle with a black plastic stock, still has the horrible military trigger and the military safety. The barrel has been shortened and is still stepped.

It is very accurate. I actually discussed getting the trigger re-done this morning.

For goats and pigs I grind off the tips to expose lead of FMJT 139 gr ammo. Most shots they work OK.

Christer,

You wouldn't even get a donkey up there never mind a horse.
Bloody goo execise though

From where he was laying we had to go up 20 meters then it was flat for about 800 meters then down steep 45 -50 degree angle. Then we stopped and hung the pieces in a tree.

I shot him at 11 am and we hung all the pieces of meat at 5pm. Next morning it was down some more then flat for a bit then down again steep again. We had all the pieces back at 2pm satrting out at 7am.

Christer

I have done a little bit of reloading for my 6.5x55. Actually last week I dropped it off at a gunsmith to have the heavy 2 stage military trigger replaced and also a new safety if he can find one. With a new trigger I will shoot it a lot more.

I have handloaded a few founds with it, some 100 gr Hornady HPs, plus some 120 gr Nosler BTs. The 100 grainers I have used to cull some deer, using broadside lungs shots or spine and brain shots. I also have a lot of 125 gr and 140 gr Nosler Partitions to try but haven't loaded any of these up yet.

Most of my shooting has been with the military FMJ ammo which I believe is for service competition shooting. This is very accurate and having probably 1000 rounds or more of it should keep me going for a while. I file (using an angle grinder - precision stuff) the tips of the FMJs off exposing the lead core. This makes an effective medium game killer (feral goats and pigs) though can be somewhat erratic in performance. The 6.5mm has enough punch to be effective enough on these lighter animals.

Christer

Do you also have a 6.5x55mm?

Christer

All the big kudus (60 inch plus) all sit on the top of the mountains (No idea actually only joking)

Actually when hunting South Africa last year BigFive and I had a discussion on that. As we drove to the bushbuck hunting area I commented looking at the hills and mountains, I commented, "Back home thats the first place we would go to find game. Climb up these hills." But in Africa mostly it seems the hunting is done on the low country and valleys. Thankfully a lot of the country is also pretty flat. I think we were discussing the abundance of leopard in those hills and the siting of blinds and baits at their feet.

The bushbuck we hunted lived in thick riverine bush and ventured onto the farms just before dusk.

Yes I have a 6,5x55 brand Varberger a Swedish very accurate gun. 3 shots guaranted within a coin in 100 meters. I mostly load the Swedish oryx at 156 grains.

About the kudu I shot they explained it looked big in the screws but was not so big because he had lived in mountain region all life.

Christer,

Are you telling me that I shot a small kudu as well because he was up in the mountains. I will tell you that we have pulled out a couple of huge bodied kudus form the waterberg mountains.

The one we could weigh went over 500 kg uncut and he was only slighty bugger than mine in size but had one hell of a thick neck. We nicknamed some of the bulls with the thick necks to "dromnek" kudu or directly translated "DrumNeck" the drum being of those large oil drums of 225 liters.

If you read my post it says I was told! ! ! ! !

Mine was big in body but only 46 inch and appeared to be bigger from the turns.
