HEYM 500 Jeffery

Heym also sells a 577 and 600 Nitro Express bolt action rifle! If the 500 Jeffery is a little too tame lol. They look like sweet guns.

I agree, I reckon the Big Bore Heym's look really good.

I Haven't had a chance to handle one but would like to.

hi there. i have a heym express bolt rifle in .505 gibbs. i've just done an article on it in this months "shooting sports" on it in uk- may issue if thats of help.
good solid rifle- key issue with this (and any other bigbore DG rifle for that matter) is the ammunition- terribly important you specifiy the ammo you want to run through it and stick to it. i had some issues with various makes but my .505 now loves the norma PH. cycles like a dream...i suggest you ask heym to feed, eject, regulate and test card the rifle to fire the new norma ph in .500 jeffrey- norma uses woodleigh solids and softs which are magnificent-
as a back up tool the heym will serve well. just ensure you test it and the ammunition thoroughly before you hunt with it.

I can speak highly of the Normas 505 loads. I have used a fair amount in my CZ Safari Classic in that caliber, and it is by far the best of the current selection of commercial loading. As for Heym, I have a straight-pull repeater in 300WM that I use for longer range work that is built marvelously well and a 80B DR on order in 22 Hornet which will be scoped and regulated for 200yds. (Okay, I'm nuts.) I think the Heym will be an excellent choice. One question to olly however, "the Heym is a back up tool" in 505!!! What do you use for a primary weapon, a tactical nuke? Dave

I;m glad you lot can afford Norma PH Ammo - it's damned expensive here and in reality, Lapua lives in Australia
so buying Normal ammo loaded with Australian made Woodleigh's is kind of questionable ???

hi all thanks for the in put reloading for the 500 jeffery no worries for us down under to reload I can alway send a dummy with a seated pill to heym, bertrum brass is available so things will work out at the end.

Reloading your own is always the far less expense way to go, and usually more reliable. I assumed the question was directed at commercial loadings. Dave

I currently have a Heym in 404 Jeffery and have the same gun in 500 Jeffery on order with Chris Sells at DG Imports. My expected delivery is in early June. I am TOTALLY happy with the 404, which is why I ordered the 500. I have begun doing some reloading in anticipation of its arrival as I'd like to take my buff with it on my Zambia trip this August. These are, IMHO, a very well made large action Mauser bolt rifle, well finished for a "production" gun. They don't give them away, but I feel they are worth the $$. I'd be more than happy to share with you my results once she arrives.

Does anyone know if Norma will be marketing cases in .505 Gibbs and .500 Jeffery? At $22.00 a round the loaded ammunition is a little out of my price range.

I already had, which is why I asked. It seems logical that they would sell componants, but they don't mention them in the list of new cartridge cases offered. I thought perhaps someone might have an insight.

What do you want to know about the Heym Express in .500 Jeffery?
I have one and also have tons of experience with reloading and making ammo, and bullets.

PS stay away from Beertram brass! It is NOT good quality. Horneber brass is KING.

Wonderful film clip! This is how shooting a heavy magazine rifle should be done! Good stance, foot position, bolt operation while recovering from recoil. A wonderful illustration of how a magazine rifle can put a double rifle in the shade when more than two shots are required.

I have not shot one of the Heym Express, but the ones I have handled seemed to be of high quality.

In the video I am shooting 535 grn Woodleigh SN at 2411 fps.

The load is:

535 grn Woodleigh SN
118 grn of Vithavouri N140
Brass is Horneber
Primer is Federal 215

The Cup points in the picture above is my owm design.

They are pure copper and weigh in at 550 grn same load data as above.
I did not get a chance to chrono these loads.

This is what the target looked like after 35 shots with the .500 Jeffery and about 20 with the Mauser 10,75x68.
Oh yeah and a video of the Mauser 10,75x68.

Just watched the video. Excellent reloading at the shoulder. But did it hurt at the end of four .500 Jeffery rounds?

I shoot about 40 rounds every time I take the .500 Jeffery out. That is the only way to master that kind of gun.
After shooting - sure I can feel the shoulder a bit

, but it does not effect me when I train with the gun.
I guess the Heym Express is build well when is comes to balance and recoil. One could get a finer gun made by a custom maker like Harry Baelder but they might not handle so well!! Then again they might
