.600 and .577 Question...???
      #102296 - 12/04/08 11:53 AM

Never owned one and probably won't, but I have cast a bullet or two, and I have a question:

In these calibers, it seems to me cast bullets would provide excellent results, and might even, with proper alloy, sizing and heat treatment, perform both from a regulation and terminal effect standpoint, as well as factory solids.

Does that make sense?

If not, why not?

I have no knowledge of the .600NE or the .577NE.

I do shoot a .500NE quite a bit. You can use good hard cast gas check bullets in the .500NE loaded to full performance. I regularly shoot the Cast Performance LBT style heat treated GC 525 grain bullets in the .500NE. These bullets regulate perfectly and have the same point of impact as the 570 grain Woodleighs. They also feel the same on the shoulder. I'm getting no lead in the barrel. In fact, it is easier to clean up than the jacketed bullets because of no copper fouling. The cost is very reasonable.

The only game I have killed with the bullet is a white tail deer. That gives no indication of performance on game, obviously. Slugs recovered from dirt and old stumps show good weight retention.

Sherman Bell wrote an article for the Double Gun Journal a year or two ago in which he hunted buffalo with a .577 BPE using bullets he cast from an LBT mould. His article was quite favorable.

FYI: Here are the recovered .577 LBT bullets from Sherman Bell's buffalo-hunting trip to Australia:
