Got A New Toy!!
      #101911 - 07/04/08 09:21 PM

I have been looking for a semi for long distance shooting for a while. Two-three buddies and I occasionally go out and shoot a sequence of 5 shots out at 300, 400, and 500 yards. We score kill zone hits x yardage for a total amount.

Gonna see how this National Match M1a does vs a 308 Savage varmint bolt and a 7mm STW Sendero both running mil dot scopes!! Got another friend with a 50 BMG who wants to join us!! We may declare him ILLEGAL-

Your aim tends to get better when you have two-three yappers jabbering about your shooting abilities and your genetic heritage!! And yes the loser gets to pay for the other guys meals!!

Its a lot of fun--if your gun shoots straight--

Excellent! You didn't list the details, but you can't fool an expert like me. it's an 1873 Springfield Trapdoor in BP 45-70, right? Dave

I plan on using a Swarovski 4x16 TDS scope at Distance.Dunno if the semi can compete with the bolts.

Gonna have my (gun)smith see about tuning it abit.

Last time we did this (about 10 months ago) Mr AH-AKA-308 beat Mr GD (Hyper velocity) 7mm STW at 400 while the STW hung in there at 300.GD was pissed at 400 to say the least. All that whiz bang velocity and no grouping!! He wasn't happy with us rationalizing and talking about SD of velocity and accuracy, either etc

I hope I can make him madder this year with a semi that beats him!!

Probably a pipe dream but whatever---

I can't tell from the photo what kind of scope mount you're using, but my experience indicates that the more stability you can achieve, the better the results. The Brookfield mount I am using (no longer manufactured) uses an Allen screw in the built in fixture on the side of the receiver, plus the dovetail for the clip loading adapter and a set screw on the receiver ring to anchor it as firmly as possible.

My M1A features a double lugged receiver and a heavy weight free floating barrel. It is a tack driver all the way out to 600 yards. It particularly likes Sierra 175 grain HPBT MK bullets. I once used it to shoot a 198-12X to beat all comers at the State Championship, including one former national champion shooting a bolt gun.
