federal .470 brass

Hi Guys, just recieved 80 rounds of federal .470 ammo to practice with when rifle arrives. Not bloody cheap is it ??

Question, why is the brass nickel coloured and secondly as it is damm nigh impossible to reload here in Spain (you have to take exams and my spanish isn't good enough) does anyone buy used brass to defray my next ammo purchase ? best, Mike

Not sure if this is legit or not--but when I asked why Remington had nickel on their 416 cases I was told that it helped in the extraction process...again not sure if that is 100% accurate but that is what I was told..

could it be on the rockwell scale nickle is harder than brass and will expand less making extraction easier,

Or perhaps its more resistant to oxidation in the african climate?

The nickel plateing is for only two purposes, #1 is to aid in extraction regardless of weather conditions. And #2 to avoid corrosion in very humid climated, glueing the case to the chamber walls! This plating is valuable in Alaska as well, and no matter the wet, for days on end, the case remains as slick as greesed goose crap, and will eject easily.

Too bad the poster is in Spain, because I'd buy his brass in a heartbeat!

Be carefull of your dies with nikel plated cases.
I completly f****d a set of 357mag dies on NP cases.
It is much harder than steel and smmal bits can fleck off the case necks (too small to see)

I had the same experience as Bramble with nickel plated .357 Mag. cases. I wouldn't put a nickel plated rifle case through one of my sizing dies period.

The nickel-plated pistol cases should be used with carbide dies. I've loaded many tens of thousands of 38/357 for target pistols over the years, no problem.

But no experience with bottleneck cases, or rifle cases, other than reloading a few once-fired Federal .470s early on. They head-seperated after a couple of reloads: no idea what rifle they were originally fired in.

Hi, I shoot and reload 470NE and live in Portugal not over a hundred miles from the Spanish border. Depending on the place you are in Spain, dropping by could be an opption to your reloads.

Hello Ducota, whereabouts are you in Portugal ? I know the rules regarding reloading and primers/powders are a lot less strict there. What do you reload with. I am looking to use Woodleigh 500 grain solids and softs. I obviously have the brass but you would have to supply the primers and powder. I am interested in reloading but it is not practical here. Would be fun to visit you and have you load me up some ammo. please let me know, Best wishes, Mike Bailey Cartaya, Huelva, Spain, about 1 hour from Faro

Hello again, Mike, I live 100 Km north to Lisbon, next to A1 motorway, outside a small town Torres Novas. A sketch will help you find my place. A couple of times a year I drive down to Jerez de la Frontera to ride bikes and to my knowledge it will take you half a day each way but maybe you will find the way to combine it with some sightseeing.
I reload for my Krieghoff with 500 grains Woodleighs solids and softs. I order cases, primers and bullets from Johannsen in Germany and buy the powder - Tubal - when I travel to France or even here, where it can be found from time to time.
The legislation here was deeply and stupidly changed two years ago with the sole purpose of making it more difficult for law abiding citizens to keep and use fire arms but there will be no problem in doing some reloads as both of us own 470 rifles.
