8 bore muzzleloader
      #101366 - 03/04/08 12:37 PM

I wanted to show everyone what just came in the mail. I picked up this rifle at a very low price and I'm really pleased with it. It has no markings what so ever, no proof marks, nothing. The bore is in decent shape with a groove diameter of about .855, with 12 grooves. I dropped a light down and while there is a lot going on with those 12 grooves, the twist is slow at about 1:100 or so. Looks like a round ball gun to me. I have a 12 bore underhammer that I hunt with and I thought it was a big bore but this baby is BIG! It has silver looking accents on the barrel at both ends and makes me think of India. It seems solid in every way with a modern looking musket cap nipple. Looks like someone has done some work on the stock with some inlays but overall very solid. Any observations you have regarding age, country of origin etc would be appreciated. Hopefully I can post pictures.

My guess would be Belgium made. Quality too high for India & sub-standard for England. The back-action lock, hammer and breech speak Belgium to me.
: Good find, bTW. Scrub the bore with 0000 wool and rapid-tap or WD 40 or something else like bore solvent.
: 1 turn in 100" is definitely for ball. you are lucky - if it was English, it might have a 36" twist too blood fast for heavy, brown-bear stomping loads.
:Have fun Cordite! I know I would.

I agree with Daryl. I am betting it's Belgan. But Indian is possible. Some of the Indian guns were good. Just depended on who made them.
Looks like a fun toy.
Keep up posted on how it shoots.

Steve

Im not an expert but for me:

No mark = Not belgium.

Most of the unmarked gun here (Argentina) are spanish but it can be Indian.

Hope this helps.

No, I have worked on many old Belgian guns (flintlocks) that had no markings at all.
Now, I know times chance, and perhaps by the 1820s making guns from Belgium was the norm, but I can't say.
All I know for sure is that some of the older guns were completely unmarked.

How come it is always somebody else that gets to say this?

Are you planning to hunt with it?

Thanks for posting. Really interesting gun.

I likely will hunt with it. It weighs in at 11 pounds and I sure wouldn't want it to weigh any less.

cordite,
I can tell you from my own limited experience that you will have a blast (pun) with that 8. I have one that Steve built and man is it fun. The balance is superb so it feels much lighter than it is yet it tames the recoil. Even though it's a big gun, it is still fairly trim in the grip area so it doesnt feel blocky. I can shoot and or carry mine all day. It instantly became my favorite rifle.

Anything with a 'bore' calibre is a friend on a hunt. This is especially true if you hunt in areas with critters that can and sometimes do bite back. Why, here's one of them now, taken (from above him) while I was salmon fishing on a local stream.

It's a video, shot from 10' over the bear's head.

You wouldn't want to shoot that long yearling, Steve. Not only was he only about 250 to 275 pounds, but a shot would probably has pissed off his mother who was only 35' from me, just inside the bush at the edge of the bridge. She was with her other 2 cubs, as I took that short video. As long as we were quiet, she paid up no attention. Anyone spoke aloud and she'd start woofing, blowing then popping her teeth.

Yeah, I have been around a LOT of them. I live near and hunt in country that's got LOTS of them.
I have never had a problem with a grizzly, but I don't let my guard down either. You can't spend much time in the Rocky's around Yellowstone without running into them. US Fish & Wildlife Service says that this area has more grizzlies per square mile than any place in North America.
I don't trust much of what they say, but I can tell you this: There's LOTS of grizzlies around there. They may be right this time.
