Most Desired African Game!!
      #100768 - 30/03/08 12:31 AM

I am curious and want to run a survey!!!

I we all were to save our $$ and hunt Africa, what top three animals would be our priorities??

I will exclude big Ele tuskers cause I know virtually All of us would like to have one and probably rank it number one!!!!

What other game and what priority appeals to hunters after a big Tusker to make your top three desired animals??

You may vote for TWO ANIMALS-methinks and assumes a big Tusker would then make this your top 3 favorite African animals!!
Favorite African Game??
You may choose 2
Buffalo
Rhino
Lion
Leopard
Hippo
Croc
Sable
Eland
Zebra
Kudu
Female Elephant
other

I went with Sable and Other. As much as I'd love to hunt Dangerous Game, I actually find plains game to be more appealing because of the sheer number of species and locations. The Sable in this case would be a Roosevelt's Sable in Tanzania and the Other would be Mountain Nyala in Ethiopia.

I'd almost rather replace the trophy elephant with any number of exotics - sitatunga, bongo, Kafue Lechwe etc.

I picked lion and bull elephant..as I feel lion hunting as we know it could be a thing of the past within 10 years or less..buffalo hunting is one of my favorites as well.

As to plains game--all time favorites are sable, nyala, roan, eland and gemsbok.

Top 3 favourite: (i.e. if I could hunt nothing else forever)
Buffalo or tuskless elephant
Kudu or Nyala
Impala or Bushbuck

Top 3 most desired: (i.e. tough hunts that I would love to experience at least once)
BIG Elephant - tracked for days on foot
Lord Derby Eland - likewise!!
Bongo - Rainforest!!

Here is a hunter that doesn`t rank bull elephants as number one. An OLD well-maned lion would be my dream trophy, but most propably this will always be just a dream, due to limited financial background.
Otherwise the buffalo is my favourite, as long as it is an old solitary bull.
Besides I love to hunt bushbuck, oryx and the very clever baboons.

I am not keen on a tusker unless i can own a DR first! My first choice is a leopard followed by a Dugga boy bull buffalo. The third one is a difficult one - do I want to hunt an old male lion at 50 meters or do I wan to hunt a 60" kudu bull? Either one will keep me happy with great memories for the rest of my life.

Naki, you hit the nail on the head I reckon. Very hard to decide between lion and kudu, but for me that was second choice to buffalo. I really enjoy hunting our local Asian water-buff, big old bulls walked-up on foot of course, and would love to compare them with Cape Buffalo.

I have been fortunate enough to sample hunting alot of the animals on your list, including bull elephant.

For sheer fun and excitement, I have to rate tuskless cow elephant hunting as tops. They are more alert and more aggressive than bulls and they deserve their reputation for trouble. As a bonus, they are relatively economical to hunt, prices competative with a buff hunt, sometimes even lower. I find no comparisson to the hunts with the tuskless tremendously more exciting and rewarding than the buff. I'll warn that tuskless hunting is very addicting and trying just once will leave you yearning for more. In fact all elephant hunting shares this addictiveness, but it worst with tuskless.

I've hunted lion and leopard but not yet successfully. So these were my choices. I understand that hippo on land can be an extremely exciting hunt, especially when you place yourself between the hippo and his water. I will be trying hippo on land in a month.

Leopard hunting is a game of patience and of wits at times. I do not really enjoy every moment and at times it can be boring but when you've got a cat feeding it is great, even when its a female or too young male. I would prefer to hunt leopard by tracking - available only at great costs in few locations - or with dogs, but as an extra to an elephant or buff hunt the method is pretty fixed and that is baiting.

Lion hunting is similar, though tracking lions is extremely exciting, even when the cat makes his escape. You are on pins and needles the entire time you are on tracks, waiting for a glimpse and not certain if he or she will be going or coming. Seeing a lion on bait is fantastic, even when it isn't the right lion. Lion close are remarkably large, even when you've seen dozens at a distance. Its a wake up when you see one close up.

In a month I will be in Zimbabwe again. I have quota for two trophy bull elephants and a tuskless as well as a leopard and a hippo which we plan to take on land.

I'll also have quota for a selection of "plains game" including a couple of hyhenas and bushbuck. Both of which I have killed before. Hyhena hunting is quite enjoyable and its cheap. Call it leopard hunting light. You will be in a blind overlooking bait early and late. Its quite enjoyable and seeing and hearing the bush come alive in the dawn and hearing the change of gaurd as the sun sets. Leopard light becuase it light on costs and also not as much attention to detail needed. I would recomend it to anyone, and especially to those who might find a leopard hunt a financial reach. The skins make nice rugs or perhaps a full body mount, the skulls are very impressive.

Bushbuck hunting can be great fun as well, especially when it takes form as a slow walk and stalk along a river (ussually dry or all but dry) in the evening. All kinds of game is spotted and since you are in stealth mode much can be approached quite closely. The whole gamut of plains game may be seen as well as elephants, buff, occasional hippo or croc near deeper permanent pools. Even if you never pull a trigger it is a great way to spend a late afternoon into dusk.

I've never hunted nyala, but they are a close cousin to bushbuck and I've seen them while stalking bushbuck, but never had quota, so I would rank nyala right up with bushbuck amoungst my favorites.

JPK

EDIT: I'll add for double rifle afficianados that my experience teaches me that an express sighted, big bore double rifle really is the ultimate weapon for elephant hunting, with no other alternative as perfect a choice.

For buff, a scoped rifle is a more forgiving choice, whether the action type is double or bolt or whatever. But you can be entirely successful with an open sighted double if you are willing to forgo some shots and work for your buff.

For hippo on land I've been told that the open sighted double is by far the best choice, as for elephant.

Everyone who has done the "tuskless" seems to have the same sentiments..very exciting hunt--and yes it is a very affordable hunt--

If all works out--I have one booked for 2010 --one bull with 2 tuskless...hope Zim holds together that long..

jpk, from the way you've described your upcoming trip, sounds as though you've bought a camp and quota in sapi or nykasanga?
i disagree on the tuskless hunts being as exciting as trophy bull. the anticipation of whats at the end of the tracks!!

Rscott,

Yes, I've bought a camp in Nyakasanga.

I love all elephant hunting, but I find then end game very much more exciting when hunting tuskless, even in the case of not finding a suitable ele. Mixing with the ussually larger cow or mixed herd is incredibly exciting to me, while the bull hunting I've done was, while exciting, less extreme in the final appraisal or approach, due in part I think from the smaller bull congregations, and also from the ussually much less aggresive nature of the bulls.

But it is a matter of degrees! And that is why I'm after two bulls this trip, with the tuskless quota just in case we get lucky early, so we have a good reason to keep walking and tracking!

JPK

I would go with a nice Sable and then Cape Buffalo.
Funny thing, I was reading recently that the early hunters in Africa generally didn't think much of hunting Leopards but now they are pretty high up on the wishlist of the modern hunter.

I don't know if it was that they didn't think much of hunting leopards but that they seldom saw them. I read a book by Donald Ker recently that said in the early days they didn't bait for leopards so it was fairly rare to see one let alone shoot one. Because of this they didn't really give leopard hunting much of a thought because without baiting what would the chances be? Interesting to see others desired game. I have hunted a kudu and impala and to me that symbolised Africa which is why I took them. It would not concern me if I didn't hunt plains game again. I also have a cape buffalo and cannot wait to go back to hunt another one. Tracking old bulls in thick cover is what hunting is about to me. Also went for the leopard as I have read/heard so much about the art of getting them to the bait in daylight I would love to experience it. Would only be taken by natural light.

Funny.

On my plains game hunt, my Eland appeared out of nowhere, and my PH whispered "So there you are". This sucker had evaded a full season of hunters. The next words from my PH mouth was "Shoot him".

It was an easy kill.

On the other hand, my quest for a bull Wildebeest or nothing (with a double rifle on foot) ate up four of my days. Those guys are crafty and swift.

So the lowly Wildebeest was my most epic hunt.

I'm annoyed, I did not read the poll allowed TWO choices so picked only Lion. Otherwise it would have been Loin AND Buffalo ,,, and cow elephant at the bottom.

Lion is my unaffordable holy grail at the moment.

For my next safari, is dollars permitted, I would hunt Zimbabwe for cow elephant, then head over to Mozambique for buffalo and sable. Only a dream at present.

Your next safari sounds like a good one..I am tentatively working on one for 2016..with a possible detour in Asia in 2015....lots to put together, not the least of which is money

I could have hunted lion for next for nothing in the late 80's by a somewhat legal/illegal means. Was offered a hunt under a citizen permit in Zambia, so part of legal quota, just not for me. Decided not to do it because the paperwork might not have allowed me to import into Australia ... and after all 7000 Rand (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) was a lot of money to me at the time .......... I do hear on the grapevine that deals are already becoming available for certain destinations in Africa on opens quota's, or cancellations or both..was just visiting this morning with a friend on that...

Similar to lion are the sheep/ibex of the world as to going up in price...would like to get a few of those under my belt before I am too old to climb and while they are still affordable for me..

BUT, yes, 7000 Rand is a pretty good price...WTH were you thinking???

I think that the method in which the game is taken should be considered,we are after all hunters, are we not?

Taking a good Tom Leopard on foot hunting in, on or around the kopje`s would be richly rewarding to me. Spot and stalk type, lots of bino work, yes I`m sure it could be a tough ask...but one morning to see a Tom sunbaking on a big granite rock and stalking him would be something.I do realise that it could take a lot of mornings..and arvos....

No bait in a tree hide shooting for me or running a tom to trees with hounds either and definitely NO spotlight.

I would be happy to hunt Bongo, no dogs.A tough hunting task yes but what hunting!

If not Bongo a Giant Angolan Sable the king of all of the antelope.

(are there any left)

Bongo . As Hemingway said once you have hunted man the other animals that can kill you don't seem as intimidating so for the danger aspect there is no comparison ,to me anyway. I voted Bongo for the animals elusiveness ,it is like hunting a ghost. A hunters skill, patience and perseverance must be at a very high level to bring one of these home. Some hunters spend an entire lifetime trying to get one . Spending weeks at a time with nothing more than a pack a rifle and bare essentials sleeping out in the open to get one of these elusive animals would be my dream hunt.

I remember all up (not airfares) it was going to cost about $3,500 - not just lion though, cape buffalo + lion or leopard + hippo + plains game .....

I was working in a foreign country at the time and remember working out if I paid no tax in that country for a certain time and did the hunt, I could ffff off out of that country before I got caught ....

But couldn't do it, as while I would have been crazy enough to do it, needed a second person to form the company with. The bloody desire for trophies also screwed me, now I would do it in a moments notice, and photos would do. Or shipping any trophies to a friend somewhere to keep on the never never and get hold of again, if ever possible.

Some times these come up and I am extremely jealous of the guys who get the opportunity and strike gold.

I remember one guy about seven years ago was able to do it, and took two problem lionesses in Namibia. Wishing for the opportunity ever since. Can't afford even airfares at the moment.

This was posted yesterday elsewhere.

No idea if it is legit, or whatever.

Yes, have a friend who is getting some oil money..he searches the web and booking agents almost daily..has come up with some really good deals..still lots of money but all in all 25% less than normal..

I took a good male in Zim a few years back..but certainly wouldn't mind taking a lioness to go along with him..they are fun to hunt..but, have to say, the most intense hunt I have ever done over there was for a tuskless ele..not sure if it was just the group we were after or what..but they were insane...I know I have mentioned this before, but there were bluff charging, pulling out little trees and throwing them our way..run back into the cover while screaming...then come back out and do it all over again...crazy hunt...and a ton of fun..and, those are still somewhat reasonable in price....

First cape buffalo was similar in that we chased them on a cat and mouse game for about 4 hours after tracking for a couple..finally got a shot into him and put him down with 2 more in his south end headed north..but that was really intense as well..

I always feel sorry for Elephant families being Culled/shot, smart animal they know what's going on, just can't get a plane out of there or carry a firearm, so throw trees & run back to cover screaming, like a cave man might !

Don't get me wrong I'm a hunter & have helped on problem Elephant Culls in 2 country's, very exiting but I don't feel right about it myself !

Had a Cow Ele run at me last year screaming, ears wide trunk up waving, kicking sand over me, scared the Shit out of me, she had two young ones with her .
Oh I was on my own here to !

Elephants are very scary things, more so in a group !

I picked Lion (also scary) & Sable (Giant tops) because they are awesome, but Lord Derby, Bongo, Mt Nayla are right there to.

Oh Black Rhino in the thick stuff (where they seem to like it) may well be up there to !

For me it's buffalo, and a few assorted plains game. I've got very little interest in shooting an elephant of my own, but would love to be involved in an elephant hunt(if I was hunting with a friend who wanted one, for example). Given half a chance I'd probably go after a croc too.

That is exactly how I felt until I hunted one..now its one of the hunts I can't wait to go back for again...up close and personal with a ele was one of my most memorable hunting experiences..

I'd love a cat hunt, but on this side of the pond my elk comes first, and if I ever make it to that side my buff. I've said for years when I win $200 million in the Powerball I'll start in Wyoming and follow the hunting season around the world for a year.

An older thread.
But none the less I chose leopard and other, other to me would have to be bushbuck!

Having not been to Africa yet I couldn't think of anything more exciting then hunting a big Tom on foot, not over bait or with hounds.
And as for bushBuck everything I have read or heard about them just excites me. Would love to take one with my mock lee speed sporter.

You reminded me of a hunt I had in Zim with the PH Nixon..we were hunting buff...we were quite a ways from our truck and got to some really thick bush when we heard the indistinguishable sound of a leopard ahead of us..we very quietly moved into the area slowly moved along in an attempt to get a look at him..we ultimately go winded and never got to see them..by the tracks a tom was breeding a female as we come upon them...another time a few years later, also in Zim..we were hiking in to hang a bait..dragging an impala..another leopard let out a growl...we sat and waited looking we spotted him slowly moving his way out of our area...incredibly animals to see in the wild..

I think that I would have to pick a Derby Eland as my most desired African hunt.

I suppose a big buff is most peoples choice as an impressive beast on the wall but I think hunting a deep bush run Bongo would be something given the climate/terrain/temps etc and what a spectacular full mount to have.

Many are the species that are now taken that are bred for ranch style which has devalued the animals taken out on true safari`s.
Do you really want a BIG buff? Got the money? Yep..OK!

I suspect big buff are at the top for a few reasons:

1. They are "almost" affordable for most, ergo are a bit of a stretch dream, but not quite totally dreaming in technicolor if you get my drift....
2. They are damned exciting to hunt and do indeed offer the real possibility of personal risk of injury or death should things go horribly pear shaped.
3. They are truly majestic beasts, awe inspiring, and an incredibly handsome trophy......
4. The hunt itself is challenging without requiring the physical abilities of a world class fitness trainer.... Tough but still achievable for any reasonably fit person.
5. Who doesn't like the taste of beef, even if the tenderness of the tenderloin of an old Dugga boy is like chewing steel cable
6. They're one of those hunts that when done once, cry out for a repeat performance.
7. The most important reason of all to me: I think it's cool !!!!

I agree with the above--would love to hunt more buffalo...BUT, if I had just one more hunt to do I would really like to hunt tuskless elephant one more time..again, for me, was the most intense hunt I have ever done in my life as far as Africa and the Big 5...The last time there they (tuskless) were very very agitated..one group come runnning towards us screaming, ripping shrubs and little trees out and throwing them with their trunks..mock charging us..etc for about 20 minutes..I was hunting with the late Ian Gibson...will never forget...

I'd pass on the elephant, it just never really interested me. I'd love to hunt buffalo, it looks like fun. . . . but what I'd really like to do is spend time just wandering around and hunting plains game, especially the various antelope, along with whatever I ran across. That just strikes me as an excellent way to spend time.

I have hunted Tuskless Cow Ele and Buff, hence I selected Lion and Hippo. however I would run my preferences as Bull Ele, another Tuskless Cow, Lion, Hippo-on land- Gemsbok, Bff, Kudu.

Apart from the Derby Eland, 2 other hunts I'd like to do are a gemsbok in a really remote community concession area such as in Namibia; and at the other extreme a Nyala in low fenced farmland areas in Natal.

Add tracking a huge bull ele in northern Namibia and a tuskless in the Zambezi valley jess and you have my top five.
