Read last evening in Sports Afield that Botswana will be closing leopard hunting as well after the 2008 season--no reason given at time the article was written. My only thoughts were, as they closed lion hunting also last year...isn't they gun in charge over there also the great "animal rights" advocate??

Now while closing lion may have had some scientific basis closing leopard hunting would seem to me to be purely based on "extreme greenie" attitudes. It would be quite extraordinary to think of leopard being "endangered" or "threatened" in Botswana???
Any one know the official reasons and justification for the closing of leopard hunting?

They didn't give any reason at all - but FWIW, they didn't actually ban Leopard hunting, they just restricted the permists to about 20 or so for the whole country. - Many of those 20 were issued to areas with very few Leopards!
I've always believed that there was no deliberate intention in Botawana to ban or restrict hunting per se, but now I'm not so sure. - They also withdrew all PAC Elephant permits in the tribal areas for 2009. Admittedly, this was largely due to some idiot overpricing the 2008 permits, so very few got shot in those areas last year.......... but when all 3 actions are combined, it doesn't bode too well for the future.
What will happen in areas such as the Delta remains to be seen and as I don't have a crystal ball, I guess all I can say is that time will tell.......

These restrictions are usually a last resort effort, so I imagine it is in good faith. However, the way the new political circumstances are going there, one never really knows. Last leo I shot was 4 years ago.
