Type B Question (pic's added)

Hi, Did the Type B sporter ever come with floorplate lock screws?, I know it was common on older military rifles to have both lock & action screws.

I have not seen a commercial Mauser Type B sporter with a lock screw. I have seen a Type C Army hunting rifle with a lock screw.

Thanks Dons, I recently purchased a Mauser sporter Type B serial 88xxx and it has has the lock screws which was also a first for me as all the other Mauser sporters I have seen did not have them.

I also asked German Gun Collectors Association about this and following is the reply I got.

The following information was given by Jon Speed, author of several books on Mauser.

From 1898-1930 period the occasional military
magazinebox which had the extra locking screws was pulled off an
inventory shelf and used on a sporter! This has been recorded on serveral
Mauser sporter models like the Type B , Type S, Type M and even Type A.
This is most often found on early examples through 1924.

I would certainly accept Speed's explanation as the final word on the subject. After all, he is the man who authored the Mauser "Bible".

we have to remember that although these are highly prized rifles today they were all being built in a military type arsenal, therefore anything can happen within reason,the fact is it is no doubt oberndorf bottom metal and could well be 1 of only a handfull ...paul
