Price of new set of barrels..?
      #99868 - 21/03/08 01:27 PM

I have a C&H 8bore Jones back action hammer 'rear end', essentially everything except for barrels and forend.

Anyone here care to guesstimate the cost of a new set of barrels, smooth or rifled?

I'm interested to hear any responses, whether we're talking about having C&H do the work, Belgian, Austrian, Spanish, US...

Thanks

Good quality rifled steel starts at $6000. Goes up from there.

Less if you are going to fit them yourself. But not much.

Tinker,

Please speak to Ernie Stallman at Badger Barrels. You won't find many people who are more willing to help with advice and who know the art of building and regulating doubles in these parts. Holland and Holland gave him a memento for his consulting work on their new Paradox guns, and I doubt anyone needs a better endorsement.

The best thing to do is to call him or Gerri on the phone after 4:00 pm Central time. Tell them Hi from me when you speak to them.

And, of course, I'll only be one among many members here looking for the project pictures.

Good hunting, my friend!

Ken Owen has replaced double barrels for me in the past. However, it was on a Purdey and the price was $12,000.00

The work was perfect, but expensive.

Gentlemen-

Thanks for your notes on this.

Mick, who's the vendor in the $6k range?

Anyone care to estimate the 'end of the day' value of such a project gun?

My sense says it'd be worth something more than the price of the barrel build...

I would start looking in Ferlach. The blanks shouldn't be too much if you do all the work yourself.

Give Nathaniel Heineke a call at 307-745-8592. He should be able to put something together for you. Typically your in the $10-12K area.

Why is this type of work so expensive?
I guess 8 bore barrels are nobody's specialty these days, but why is this work so much more than stocking a gun? How many hours does building barrels require anyway, or is there a "black art" premium commanded?

It is so expensive because you need normally 3-4 people to do the job. Barrel maker, actioner, barrel blacker, engraver, proofhouse.
Assembling the tubes and fitting them takes the longest. It is quite a skilled thing to do, especially if you want the primer imprints to be dead centre and still have the same stock measurements as before. If you want to be able to put the makers name on the barrels you will end up paying a bit of a premium for the priviledge which you might recoup if you end up selling the gun...

I would give Scott Anderson a call 817-834-3006 He does Repair and Restorations of fine guns. I bet if he can't he will know who the best person for the job would be. I would put his work as good as Turnbulls or better.

In Texas there's John Maples.

On AR he's Shikarafar1.

There's the 450 #2 Merkel being

discussed here on NE & AR and

he did the barrels for it!

Just as a update on what I posted earlier. I talked to Scott today and he told me he knows where to get the proper blanks to do your barrels the price of corse will be different for smooth or rifle barrels. Why not do both? I would give him a call or drop by if you are in Tulsa for the gun show next weekend I will be at D3.

Tinker:
I'm having Nate Heineke and Keith Thomas build my double rifle. It is a Holland style back action sidelock screwgrip. The barreled action is on its way from England to be stocked and finished by Nate. The barrels are proper contour and weight for a 450-400 3 1/4 and both men do excellent work for a pittance of what H&H charges. Keith did 5 years with Purdey and is currently making guns for Westley Richards. Nate was 5 years at Griffin and Howe and was just written up in Peterson's Hunting for the May addition pages 32-33 for a bolt rifle he built for Wayne van Zwoll. He is also building me a .375 H&H on a P14 for my Oct. trip to Tanz. I'm sure they could do a fine job for a set of barrels for you.

I noticed a set of .600 chopper lump barrels, separate and in the white for sale for 500GBP. 2 3/4" breech face though which is too small for your action - right?

Thanks to all for your thoughts on this

Huvis-
The standing breech on this action measures somewhwere in the 2-7/8" range, I'll have it out of the clink some time this week to measure it again for sure.
I'll post the width and firing in center to center here in the thread.

Sinner-
I've heard strong words of recommendation for Ken Owen elsewhere. I may well drop him a line some time soon.
Feel free to PM me his contact info.
I'll likely run a contact/inquiry campaign of possible builders in the next month or so.
