Regarding practice, or rather, testing, if you really want to be a long range hunter...

Remember, the only groups that matter are one-shot groups.

Practice all you like and please do, but to really find out whether you can kill game consistently without wounding at long range, try this little "game" for a test.

First, always use a critter-shaped target. No bullseye or other scope- or sights-friendly targets. Shoot in all weather. Do not puss out and only go to the range on still, calm, windless days unless you only hunt on such days.

Now, every time you go to the range and BEFORE YOU DO ANY SHOOTING, set your target at long range, go back to the firing line. Gather several fellows around you to watch if any are present and fire one shot. It is best if you can do about a 1/4 mile sprint to get your heart rate and breathing up first. All in the attempt to duplicate field conditions.

Now, go check that one shot. That's it. That's the one that matters. That shot should be comfortably in the kill-zone of the animal target you are using.

When you can do this consistently without groups or "fouling shots" being fired, you are getting there.

I use a different standard. I shoot multiple (usually five) five-shot groups. Among the groups, the absolute worst is selected to represent abilty at that range. No shots are deleted; there is no such thing as a "flier."

Chuck - you are right - some barrels will deliver up to 150fps higher velocties than another seemingly identical rifle, with virtually the same pressures - why this happens, no one knows. I've had a few of these myself, but some of the mid and low spectirm barrels as well.
; I had one 'low' barrel, a M30 Remington P-17 sporter that delivered 120fps lower speeds than any manual said for any given maximum load - don't know why and of all things, pressure signs were at the max as well. I re-chambered it to .300 WinMag, hoping to get .300H&H factory ballistics out of this 'slow' barrel. Subsequent testing proved the re-chamber, which only moved the throat forward a small amount & turned a slow-poke into a screamer. With some book loads, it delivered over 150fps higher speeds at normal pressures than what those same books showed. It beat the ballistics of the .300WTBY quite easily with some bullets weights - and from a 24" barreled, originaly 'slow' barrel. Sometimes there are no explanations for these 'happenings'.
; 9.3x57 - good shooting! Most vivid lesson, too. Obviously you have too much spare time on your hands - HA! Just goes to show that 'good' practise if of paramount importance.
: So many guys I see each early fall, put up a target at 100 meters and blast away 1/2 a box of Ultra mags, hit the target a few times, then think they are ready for hunting and fully capable of hitting a moose, deer or elk in the heart at 700 yards because some advertizement said they could. Makes me sick at the heart.

Daryl, I was a much better shot in my 20s, not because of anything physical really, but I would shoot 1500 rounds a year through my .243 and then later my .270 mostly varmint rounds at 300 yards. If you could hit a marmot at 300 yards consistently, then as long as you weren't winded and had a decent rest a deer or elk at that distance was never a concern. Once kids and a "real job" entered the equation shooting and fishing time took a hard downturn, never got to zero thankfully. Some riflemen are born, I'm not one of them. But almost anyone can be a good shot given a good range, the resources and a desire to be one.

Regards,

Chuck
