Help with new Trap Gun... which to get???
      #9969 - 24/02/04 12:28 PM

ok, my dad and I spent saturday AM at the club and he, having not shot from 16-yds in 19-20 years, and me having NEVER shot from anything more than about 5-yards off, well, we came to the immediate conlusion that:

a) my 20ga Ithica o/u choked IC/M was brutally inadequate
b) his 20 Benelli choked Full was also brutally inadequate

so, we need a new trap gun... pronto... while we have 3 twelve gauge guns already, none of them is suited for heavy use or, for that matter, ANY use... (one non-functional, one semi-functional, one too rare).

that leaves us with the dillemma of which route to go...

he would like another benelli montefeltro (would obviously have a pair of barrels, a 26 for the field and a 30 or 32" trap barrel). I can't hit anything with them though... nada, zip, zilch, bupkus. as such, I'm pushing the idea of an SKB 585 or 785 trap or skeet grade... they feel a lot better for me and are similar to the old remington 3200 he used to shoot consistent 95s with.

the price difference is a non-issue, well, OK, its an issue, but not enough that a concise leaning will be negated on that basis.

my other point for the SKB is that it can be taken to countries with semi-auto-unfriendly laws... whereas the doubles are a no-problems proposition.

if you guys were in this situation... what would you do???

and I will send my dad the link to this thread... so be nice!!!

It's been a while since I have been on the trap range but this is a no brainer Find another REMINGTON ! You can spend more but ya can't do much better. okokok I know I know the Valmet isn't too bad but the others out weigh the remington in the cost department sooooooo much is it really worth it ???? Me I switched to beretta a few years ago. You can call me yellow it's ok because I just stroke that pretty wood and coin silver no matter how bad I shoot

remington doesn't even make a trap-grade double any more, and the 3200s have extractor problems up the wazoo!

the SKB 785s typically have excellent wood and tasteful, if simple engraving.

for $1400, it seems a decent value (assuming GU still has it, its a demo).

I regularly see the older Remington trap grades here. I no longer shoot trap so I can not offer much more on that. When I bought my last pair of Berettas I did look at SKB But I just did not like the feel of the gun. It was indeed a well made gun for the $$$ though.

I'm the flip-side... I think the Berettas and brownings feel like crap... the SKB is "sweet" to me...

I will admit that after shooting Remington for so long it took a bit to get used to the Beretta. I just could not get past that glossy finish on the SKB. I still believe the old Remingtons are the best thing going.

... how about this:

all-original un-fired Ithica SKB Model 700 (like my old 500, just nicer) Trap-Grade, Monte Carlo stock, wide rib, step-up rib, 12ga, 30" IM/F...

$900obo

I think we have a winner...
