I believe the CNS brain/cranium/atlas of a large croc to be more like cigarette-packet size. The shot will invariably be made from a very steady rested ambush position. A good DR (..and a good DR shooter!) should be able to manage this out to 100 yds, but closer is better of course!

That accuracy is beyond my capabilities with my .450 NE DR without doubt. The Valmet/Tikka with a scope would be much more suitable or a bolt action in a medium to .375 calibre.

every person with more than 1 gun has a favourite when i open my safe i take the 375 first. i say take the gun you love the most. you love it more because you shoot and handle it better and you are more comfortable with it.

I'm a fair shot but there's NO WAY I can hit a cigarette sized target at 100 yds with my 500 NE.

This safari would definitely require a Double and a big scoped bolt for me--

If I had the gun and time to find its potential the only other option--maybe a 450/400 Double with a QD scope???

375 or 416, no matter, it would be a blast to go on this Safari-

Ripp-Have a super time and take lots of pictures!!!

Aw, c'mon guys, you're being too modest!

A cigarette-box at a hundered yards hunkered down over a steady rest?
Check page 49 of the 1910 H&H catalogue, they put 8 out of 10 into 2 5/8 x 2 inches with an open-sighted DR in front of the editor of The Field. Ten out of ten went into 3 1/4 x 3 3/8 inch.
In fact, check the H&H Trials for the 12-bore Paradox: the tester put 10 out of 10 into 5 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches in 1886! A Paradox!

We now have better bullets and better powder by far!
...but perhaps not better marksmen?

BTW, this is starting to look like a disagreement: it is not! A scoped medium-bore is definitely the best for plains game including croc for the vast majority of hunters today. But this doesn't mean an express-sighted double wouldn't work! Before decent scopes appeared, most folks did just fine with their open-sighted DRs. ...for everything! ...for decades!

Marrakai

The problem is if you miss a cigarette box you get some cigarettes to smoke!

If you miss the brain of a croc, you may forgo a couple thousand US dollars in trophy fees!

If one is confidant maybe, but I would want to be much closer without a scoped accurate rifle.

Who knows? My Jeffery is at a gunsmiths at the moment. When the triggers are fixed it may be a lot more accurate (ie the triggers were excessively heavy per the gunsmith at 9 and 13 lbs!).

with the incompetance of the airlines these days regarding baggage, i wouldn't even consider taking two weapons. ten african safaris and my 416 has handled everything from leopard baits to buffalo and elephant with a few warthogs in between. make it easy on yourself and settle for only one trusted weapon!

If they can loose two rifles in a gun case, they can also loose just one too! Insurance is the safeguard, just in case.

I have had safaris with just one rifle, either a .30-06 or a .375 and safaris with two.

Indeed, insurance is the safegaurd. And taking two rifles is no more hassle than one, but you have your own insurance, if you have chosen prudently, since each rifle will be capable for all game you wish to hunt should one go "tits up."

Not to be overly redundant but-- I wouldn't go to Africa without insuring my rifle--too much risk of potential problems--and especially if I am going to hunt a Double
