Scope For Medium To Long Range?

Most Of the big game that I shoot is usually 100 yards or less, but I would like the ability to shoot longer. I've bought a lot of new rifles this past year and I'm really getting in to shooting a lot more. I would like to start practicing at longer ranges with my 300RUM. What type and brand of scope would you guys reccomend for med to long range shooting, say 500 to 800 yards? And Why. I have a Nikon 3x9x40 on it now, and I'm shooting pretty decent out to 300 yards. For target shooting at medium to long range any of the Leupold fixed power target scopes will do well, but in my opinion 10x is best. I think you will find the 300 RUM to have excessive recoil. Until you get a dedicated target rifle, stick with the 3-9x.

There was just an article in " Rifleshooter" on this very topic--it recommmended anything from a Schmidt/Bender 4 to 16 to a Leupold VX-III--8x32---depending on what you feel comfortable with--

I have several 6.5 to 30 VX-III Leupolds that work well however I must admit the S/B's and Swarovski's are noticably better, at least to me, when you get out past 5-600 yards or more--IMHO..On several of my hunting riggs that I use for antelope, deer and elk I use the VX-III in 4.5-14--I really like this the best for an all around scope but I am NOT target shooting with them --merely longer shots during hunting seasons..I have a S/B -4x16 on a Cooper 6/284 I use for praire dogs--awesome scope..again most shots are between 200 and 400 yards..

I shoot a Remington custom shop 300 Ultramag with 200 gr Nosler partitions on game out to 450 yds if conditions allow such a shoot--

The scope is a Swarovski 3x12 with the TDS feature. Combine this with a laser range finder and decent shooting conditions and you have a great setup!!

Ihave a 338-378 WBY with a similar TDS setup with a 16 power scope and I am going to swap the scope to a 12x Swarovski!!The 16x is too much magnification and scope weight to carry around and be practical--


I think a 12x scope is perfect for most long range game.Whether enough for target shooting I dunno--

Interesting question. Like you, almost all my deer have been shot under 150 meters. The exception was my fallow stag last year which was taken across a gully at about 325 meters - estimate is based on a heart shot when aiming for the shoulder / lung / spine - a drop of about 12 inches from my Kimber Montana 7mm 08 rifle zeroed at 200 meters.

I have now got a Leupold VXiii 2.5-8X with Boone & Crockett reticle. I find this very useful & it gives me the confidence to shoot it at 450 meters. I will be taking it for a Sika Stag hunt in May (our southern hemisphere fall & peak rut). But the shots are likely be under 50 meters!

The B&C reticle took a bit of getting used to. The instructions suggested that I use the small triangel mark for the 7mm 08 but this gave me only 6 X. So I used the magnum setting at full 8X but zeroed for 100 meters rather than 200. I then use the subsequent marks incrementally. I have shot very well at 2 club shoots with this set up. My friend has a 4-16X B&C reticle on his 7mm WSM & shoots to 600 meters comfortably. He now wants to work up to 900 meters. I have a Swarovski 2.5-10X on my 280 Ack Imp & have shot small game at over 400 meters. I would be comfortable with 600 meter shots if I had a B&C reticle scope on that Sako.

We use range finders for all long range work. I will try this on game only after the trials are complete & I have full confidence in my ability to kill deer cleanly. Good luck.
