28 gauge is a relatively popular gauge used in American skeet competition and to some extent in the hunting field. Although I do not shoot American skeet, I have hunted a good deal with 28 gauge guns, including a Winchester 101 O/U, and more recently with a pair of Briley tubes in my Merkel 201E 12 gauge O/U. The tubes add weight to the barrels of the Merkel, which were otherwise too light.

I use the gauge primarily for dove hunting, a popular sport in my area, with a daily bag limit of 15. I have no difficulty obtaining my limit and enjoy the challange of shooting with a gun which patterns identically with its larger relatives in 20 and 12 gauge, but uses a smaller weight of shot. Performance is not much different from that of a 20 gauge.

Also developed quite a following on "Put and Take"-type pheasant and quail preserves where birds are shot up close. It is world's better than a .410, but can be and is built very light and handy.

Thanks fella's,what size shot do you use on the different game?
I would assume that it would be simular to what is used in a 12 gauge, just less of it.
Conneticut arms have a deal going at the moment that I thought was very reasonable.
A SXS 28 gauge cased ect for under US$4000-00.

Al:

I don't own one but they guys I know that use them use a variety of sizes depending on what they are shooting. Larger sizes mean few pellets in the 28, tho, and the most common sizes I have seen on the put'n takes are 8's for quail and 7 1/2's and 6's for pheasant.

Prince Charles (one of Englands top game shots by the way, though I suppose he should be) uses a pair of 28 bores (Purdeys I think). He calls them his "peashooters" and he doesn't seem too handicapped rgds, Mike Bailey

The 28's are delightful on grouse and hand-thrown clay birds.

Oh, I forgot, Vice President Dick Cheney used a 28 gauge to shoot a hunting companion in the face at 30 yards.

Alan,

I have been shooting a 28 gauge Parker ( 2 barrel set Q1/Q2 and F/M) for the last 20 years. It is a wonderful gauge and does a great job on Arizona dove and quail. I also use it on wild North Dakota pheasant with great success.

Some 28 gauges are built on 20 gauge actions.....these are "OK" but not a delightful as one on a true 28 gauge action.

One warning: If you buy one, your "other" shotguns will be spending a lot more time in the safe!

I use it for Grouse and Woodcock, guns are a tad lighter and the round patterns well out to 40yds.

There has been a fashion for 20 bores in England for driven pheasants for a while, supposedly for the challenge, although most 20s shoot loads equivalent to standard 12s now anyway. 28bores are becoming more fashionable and for a good shot, they are more than adequate for all but very high bird shoots (long range) such as some of those found in the southwest of England where you really should use 34 or 36 gram loads out of a longer barrelled heavier gun.

Alan,

You won't regret this purchase....... The RBL's offer outstanding value for the $$$. A friend has one in 20 gauge and it is superb in both looks and handling.

Congrats!!

I have two RBL from CVSM a 12g 30 inch duck gun and a 20g 28 inch quail gun.

I love both of them, they stocked them to 17.25 inches for me I hunt them pretty hard. No problems yet, even though the 12 g gets a steady diet of 3 inch 00 black cloud for Geese.

I tried the 28g but ended up with the 20g, it's not much bigger and with my freakish LOP I thought the 28g would be butt heavy.

For me the 28 is perfect for quail. I have a Scottish hammer gun with 28" barrels and love it.

Alan, here is one perspective you may want to consider. Pre war 28 gauge guns, especially those made by top London makers are rare, very rare. They are rare for the simple reason that not very many were made. Not many were made because they were obviously not very popular back then. This does not mean they are not popular today, and there is a somewhat of a current 28 gauge trend. I personally like the caliber a lot, especially on partridge, but I do also tend to prefer the 20 gauge especially when rough shooting because I find that the 20 bore is more effective on a larger range of birds, including ducks and pheasants. Every shotgun collection should include at least one 28 gauge and also for that matter a .410 and an 8 bore! Best James.
