My Baikal (the bad one)
      #98682 - 08/03/08 06:34 AM

Hey, I was conversing with a member here as well as doing a little bit of reading and came to the conclusion that the Baikal rifle I had probably did not in fact "sping" the frame, in the sense of stretching the steel. The bbls being pushed off face slightly was probably more likely a result of the primer being pushed into the firing pin hole hard against the retracted pin. After I had fired the rifle I did try to close it on a piece of paper, the action was still tight enough that it would not easily close on the paper. I do belive the action was still as tight as when I fist shot it and did not actually permanently stretch out.

Obviously I do not know much about trouble shooting double rifles, I would like a little input from others that are more knowledgeable to help clear up what exactly the problem was.

Also is it possible the stress of the primer slamming on the retracted firing pin may also have had something to do with the safety failing. I can imagine there was significant rear wards force on the pin. I do not know how the inner workings of the rifle are set up. Perhaps the only way to know would be to take one apart.

What is the gun chambered for? Does it have bushed firing pins?

The safety simply locks the triggers from moving up and engaging the sears, so I don't think it would cause this problem.

Is this a side by side or over-under?

What ammo were you using? Factory? P+? Handload? Type Primer?

What was the problem you encountered?

I had primer flowback in one of mine, a 7x57R, factory S&B being the culprit. Pulled all bullets, reduced charge by 2 grains, problem disappeared.
