Scope Question For 375

I put a Leupold VX III 1.5 X 5 on my 375. I was thinking about putting that scope on my 12 guage slug gun, because the scope on the 12 guage lacks a lot. What kind of scope would you rcommend for a 375 H&H for deer, elk, bear and moose. I'm not to worried about African game right now that trip is a year and a half away. Where do you guys like your zero set at 200 yards? Thanks for all the help.

IMHO, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the Leupold 1.5 X 5 scope you already have. If you feel you need something with a bit more magnification, I'd go with the Leupold 2.5 X 8. On my .375s, I use the Leupold 1.75 X 6, and have shot game in excess of 200 yards with it. Funny thing is, I've never had it set at more than 4 X, except when at the shooting range.

Absolutely true.

Scopes are like women though, everybody has their preferences.

If for some reason you want a higher power, go for it. My .375 wears the same M8-4X Leupold I stuck on it when I bought the rifle in 1987 or so. I have made do and for most hunting it has been fine; plains game in southern Africa and deer and elk here.

But a good 3x9 would be a great option for a .375 as well. In fact, over the years I have used the upper powers of my variables on other rifles quite a bit, particularly for shooting from one of my stands or "Blitz Blinds" and I am watching a deer move thru the timber edge and I want to make sure I do not nick a branch when I shoot.

All that to say it totally depends on the game you intend to hunt and where you intend to hunt it.

When I bought my first .375 years ago, I put a 2 1/2x Leupold on that rifle based on some of the common gun writer recommendations of the time. Those worthies continually mantra'd that a ".375 doesn't need magnification". Then I came to realize that the CALIBER doesn't matter, the GAME and COUNTRY do. And for my hunting of deer, elk and African plains game, more magnification has come in handy very often. That 2 1/2x would have been a mistake many times over had I kept that rifle and scope for long. As it is, the 4x has served me pretty well.

Orient your choice around the game and country you intend to hunt and you will do fine.

I will second that, I don't emotionaly like scopes but sure could have done with one a few weeks ago. I had to turn down a lovely Eland Bull for lack of precision at range in cover.

I agree with all the above.

A quality scope up to a light 2.5x8 variable should be fine.You may find you never take it off 2.5 except in certain situations.

Have a 1.5 to 5 VX-III on my Sako, .375 and feel it is more than adequate for shots out to and beyond 200 yards--Have a 1.75 to 6 on my .416's and like them as well--don't really see. IMHO, where you would really need much over 6 power for normal shooting ranges with a .375..

Whats everyones opinion on Reticles? I'm picking up a Leupold VX-III for my 375 H&H, and through the Leupold custom shop there are several reticles available, I'm really hooked on the German #1 style, is that style in your opinion any worse than say the standard crosshairs? Expessially for Dangerous game?

I have tried that reticle and find it imprecise as my eye is not drawn to the fine tip of the post but the thicker stem. You may find it different however as this is purely a subjective opinion.

I think if that is what you like and it works well for you then you should get it--on ALL my dangerous game rifles that are scoped..I have a Leupold VX III-Heavy duplex in either 1.5 to 5 or 1.75 to 6..the one in 1.75 to 6 is going on its 4th African hunt in a couple of months--no problems thus far--and is mounted on a .416..really like that combination..I just pulled it out for the first time in 2+ years to check it out and start practicing with it..I had not checked it since I was last in Africa--checked first with a couple shots at 50 yards and then 100 yards--it was dead center--no adjustment necessary after the long flight back to the US--seeing how some of the luggage is handled I was very impressed by that...

Bramble, I had a couple post reticles on rifles years ago and though I THOUGHT I was going to like them I had the exact same experience as you. For some reason it just didn't work with my eyes.

I do like the somewhat similar #4 very much, and have several, both Leupold and Burris. I like the Burris best as the middle crosswire is thinner than the Leupold. The Leupold seems to subtend about 3.5-4 inches at 200 yards. Like the post reticle pictured, the #4 has the "open top" {actually, fine wire} which allows full viewing of the body of the critter. Fast acquisition with both #4's tho.

The pointed picket used to be criticised by some writers (Colin Shadbolt springs to mind) as being deficient in poor light. It was something to do with the top disappearing, after which elevation could be dodgy.

What about Illuminated Reticles then? Leupold Offers those in the VX-III in the Duplex, Heavy Duplex, and German #4.

Edit: Damn, there only available in 30mm tube, all my rings are 1"
