On my hunt in the NT, saw enough salties in the swamps, rivers, and in the coastal ocean, but "no hunting" even though they are making a comeback. Or at least I was told don't shoot.

The African crocodile is known as the Nile crocodile (other names?). Fresh water. Not sure of its salt water capabilities.

The "Saltie" or Saltwater crocodile is its much nastier Northern Australia cousin. If you (and everyone else) is lucky we may just see some sporting permits become available.

I'm told that they can convert to salt water by becoming dormant for 24-48 hours and then they can re-convert back to freshwater the same way.

A few years ago when we had all those floods that wiped out Mozambique, I did an ariel game count along the Crocodile River (RSA) about a week after the floods subsided and the entire area was devoid of flatdogs.....normally it's stiff with them. The theory was that a large percentage had been washed out to sea and converted to salt water..... I wouldn't comment on that as I don't know enough about it, but by the next time we overflew the same area (a year later) they all seemed to be back to their pre flood numbers.

Croc hunting draws me in for some reason. That is a hunt I have always wanted to go on. Most of the big 5 are lost on me. I am a cat lover and I just don't see shooting a elephant. If their was a particular beast in the bunch that was causing trouble I would not mind. I have to confess that I just do not understand the allure to the cape buff. What a ugly critter. My top three for africa would be Croc, Sable and schmitar horned orxyx.

Yeah well, you never grew up around guys that have had several rooms full of every type of African trophy you can mention. When I was just in ROT-CEE in high school, I met my hunting partner then and didn't know it. After we had gotten into a couple of fights over a couple of not so pretty girls, we settled our differences and said they FUGLY anyways. We went to his dad's home and I was flabbergasted with all this Africana when I walked through the door. Between that, shootin his dad's big stuff, reading Jack Lott and Elmer Keith and others, I was hooked for life. Yes there were crocs there too. One day, I'm going and it's going to be a good one.

Don't understand the allure of a Cape Buffalo?......wait till you see a few close up...... I bet you'll change you're mind

Crocs require good shooting skills, but not really a lot of hunting skills, probably one of the best countries to go for crocs is Mozambique as it's so cheap and there are so amny of them. After that Zim if you're happy with the political situation. Tanzania has some monsters, but they're only on 14 & 21 day licences which means that it's an expensive hunt unless you want to take the other species such as Buff etc.

LOL, well you probably got me on that one. The same was true for me with bears. I pretty much got roped into my first hunt. After you chase something that can make hamburger out of you it can be pretty passe hunting regular game. Still myself I find the african plains game very appealing. The bird hunting you guys have is to be honest my biggest interest in Africa. I have always wanted to do the train Hunt through Holland and Holland. My wife and I have been on some of their programes before and they were indeed first rate. Every time I think of Cape Buff I remember watching Mutual of Omeha's Wild Kingdom and the buffs that would ram the land rovers Speaking of which I watched a very intersting documentary on the "Cave elephants" last week.

We've got some great wingshooting in the same area as the H&H shoots. I'm also a great fan and my favourite must be the francolin over pointers and of course the duck & geese.
Details are on my website.

Have H&H resumed selling hunting now? they got targeted by the antis a few months ago and removed all hunting info from their website.

As to Buff, I just love hunting them and any time I have a day or two between clients and am in a suitable area, I go and hunt one for myself.

Warthog, bushpig, cape buffalo, crocodile.

The uglier the better.

Luckily for me my wife has the same motto
I'm with ya on the bush pigs, hogs and croc. Not quite sold on the buff yet.
