458-458Lott??
      #97250 - 22/02/08 08:32 AM

If you have a rifle chambered in 458 LOTT, can you also shoot 458 win mag ammo in it as well....? They are both headspace off the belt so my guess is you can. Say your ammo does not show up and Lott ammo is not readily available would this be fine to shoot with a scope adjustment of course. Also would prolonged shooting of the shorter cartridge do any harm to the chamber. If a person was trying to condition themselves to recoil by starting with 458 Win Mag loads and working up to Full 458 Lott loads? I must assume if you do shoot the win mag in the lott you will loose velocity just as you would shooting a 375 H&H round in a 375 Ackley or 375 Wetherby.
Any input is appreciated.
Jason

mngane:
One of the criteria Jack Lott imposed on the original design of this cartridge was that it should be able to fire the .458 Win Mag in the Lott chamber with no significant loss of performance. In fact, that is the sole reason why it is shorter than the parent .375 H&H case.

Lots of "experts" including Wieland say that it can be done. I haven't tried it personally, but if you look at the case dimensions, you could think of it as firing a round with excessive clearance between the bullet and barrel rifling. Therefore accuracy may be reduced, but no damage should occur

Look on it as firing .38 Specials in a .357 Magnum revolver. Many thousands of such rounds are fired daily around the globe, and there is certainly no accuracy loss!

In Jack Lott's own words, from his well-known article in the 10th Edition of the Handloader's Digest that started the whole .458 Lott Circus all those years ago:

You CAN shoot the 458 Win mag in a 458 Lott--there might be a slight decrease in velocity with the Win Mag ammo in a rifle chambered for a Lott--but not enough that you or your quarry will notice..

What modifications to a Dakota Safari 458WM Bolt{dropped mag} would be needed to go to a Lott other than reaming the chamber?? Would the OAL of the bullet work in the dakota magazine? The feed rails should be fine--Other technical problems to overcome to make the rifle really reliable??

What gunsmiths would folks suggest to make the conversion??

All comments are appreciated(and yes I already have two 458WM's I will not modify!!)!!!

The Lott chamber has a gentle radius at the end of the neck part of the chamber, not a sharp shoudler as with normal chambers, ie: the very much older .458 Watt's which the Lott almost duplicated. This gentle radius is why factory .458 WM can be fired in the Lott chamber and shouldn't be fired in the Watt's chamber. With a Watt's chamber, the sharp edge will cut or shave jacket material from the bullet and promote inaccuracy. Too, after several .458's through a Watt's, the buildup would prevent full length ctg.s from chambering.
: This - 'use .458WM in the Lott' is only a good idea if you cannot get full length brass - which is as simple as blowing out any .375 case or merely buying Lott brass. There really should be no reason to have to use the shorter case. Shoot enough of them and they're all you'll be able to shoot, btw - same as shooting too many .38's in a .357 mag.

I fired a 458 win loaded shell in my 458 lott and it went slower then my friend could shoot it in his own gun. I don't why Maybe that one shell under loaded.

My CZ is marked 458 LOTT/458 win mag. I have not had a chance to shoot 458 win mag over the chronograph out of my Lott. I don’t think there will be much difference, The possibility is it may be marginally slower because the Lott chamber creates more free bore. This will reduce pressure.
