Remington SxS SPR220
      #96825 - 16/02/08 06:25 AM

Hello to all,
I'm considering one of these for deer driving this Fall.
http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/SPR_models/SPR220_side-by-side_specs.asp
This model:12 3" 28" Blue Hardwood Double Cyl/Cyl 43 3/4" 7 89540 $392 .
I chose this for its double trigger and 3" chambers.
I will chop the barrels down to 20-22" myself and use Brenneke slugs, either 3" or 2 3/4".
About 5 years ago I was lucky to catch Gander Mt. at a weak moment and they had cases for sell
(200 per case in 5 round boxes at 1.50 per box )I still have 600 rds. of 2 3/4" and 800 of the
3".
I know the regulation of the 2 barrels is a big "if" but either way it will be a decent beater.
The question is do you fellows think this shotgun will hold up to some abuse or should I pass on
and look for something else? I'm not looking for pretty, first time out here in the PA. woods
in a winter drive and this thing will look like trash by the end of the day.
Opinions please, Thanks to all.

Add on to last post,
A buddy just told me about this shotgun:http://www.stoegerindustries.com/firearms/coach.tpl
It's a few dollars more but is already short barreled,3" and with choke tubes.
What do you think between the two, which is more reliable, stronger ???

I haven't actually seen one of the remingtons but I haven't heard good things about them. Mostly just very poor fit and finish. I have seen and handled some of the Stoeger guns and they're not bad for what they are. I like them. I'm planning to get one soon to use next season as a hog and black bear gun.

the remington is a baikal off course, that will be one of the toughest guns you will encounter ever.
fit and finish will be lacking, but they were never buildt for show.

best

Thanks for the replies,
I happened to be at Dick's sporting goods and noticed a Stoeger Uplander 12Ga.
for sell, they had several for 269.00 each.
I have sent a few pictures and can say that although this is the first SxS
I purchased, for the price so far I'm impressed. The gun is nicely finished
with even bluing, not bad looking walnut and locks up like a vault...it
is very tight. The triggers have a crisp let off and with it's 26" Bbls
not all that bad balance wise.
Now the tough part is going to be sighting the Brenneke's.The chokes are IC & M,
I would like to try IC's for both barrels and fortunately it seems that Winchester
chokes are compatible with the Uplander.
I will let you know how the sighting in goes and what's next.

oscar

if it got chokes, see if you can find rifled ones for it. that would be the cheapest paradox you could find, but one hell of a fun gun.

Hi Peter,
I am going to try IC's first then cylinder bore.As for rifled tubes,
I might try them later, the Brenneke rounds I have are for smooth bores.

With either the 3" or 2 3/4's I am hoping to get both barrels to place
2 rounds each into a 6 in. circle at 50 yards, then sight one barrel for
up to 100 yards if possible.

I know this is a long shot but it will be interesting to try,and if it
works out I may consider adding a set of sights.

The Baikals are very good guns for the money and are strong enough to make large case black/smokeless powder rifles with - within reason, of course.
; The Stoeger looks OK, but I prefer splinter forends.
; Try your slugs and shoot them off a bench holding the gun as if you were shooting offhand.
; A rear sight is a great help and it's dovetail can easily be cut and filed into the rib. You can get various sizes in Marbles or Williams rear sights as well as front sights, but if it shoots well with some make of slugs (or handloaded round balls) I'd be thinking in terms of a 1 leaf rear sight. The Point blank sight for out to 50 yards and the leaf for 100 - depending on how it shoots, of course.
; After thinking about this answer and my own shooting with balls in a 12, only one sight is necessary. With an initial speed of 1,500 to 1,550fps, the 12 bore ball has a point blank range of nearly 120yards, which is past it's normal effective range or 'around' 100 yards.

Short Stoeger update,
I was able to get away to the range for a short time today, only 1/2 hour to give the Stoeger a quick try.
The chokes were removed to see what the cylinder bores
would do.The 3" loads shot low,about 1-1/2 feet at 25 yards.
Since I only had a bead to sight with it took some luck
and sighting high on a mark I made above the target.I
found the right barrel shot on target with 2 inch. groups
but the left barrel shot 1 foot low to the left giving
2-2 1/2 inch groups.

The 2 3/4's gave much better groups,shooting about 8in.
low but grouping both barrels on but slightly to the left of
target.Four rounds into four inches,2 right and 2 left.

I am going to try some make-shift sights to attach to the
barrels,I may be able to shave an inch or two off that group
if I can actually see the target.

Thanks for the info Daryl S

Here are the slugs I am using,I had to open one of the 3"
cases...That hurt! Oscar
