Barrel length

I am beginning my conversion on my Beretta SxS...First will be cutting barrels...What would be a good length for 45-70? 24" ?? I see them at 23-3/8 24 24.5 and sometimes 22....Is there a way to determine optimum length for a particular gun and velocity??

If it was a .470 I'd say 26", but seeing it is going to be a 45-70, I'd make them 24" or maybe 23" as the minimum.

I like 24" but I am short at 5'6" They seem to balance better for me due to hand position LOP etc.

I think much of this is personal choice. as balistically it will only make 30-50 fps difference.

My 45-70 has 26" barrels and I like it just fine

I have built them with barrels as short a 20 inches and as long as 26. I like the 24 inch length best. Good luck with your new gun project. Bob H.
