What is the least expensive option for acquiring a "new" 404 Jeffery?

What is the best donor action? Can one "simply" rebarrel a RSM in 416 and/or 458 Lott?

Is the CZ Safari Classic still need a visit to the gunsmith or is it better quality than the standard CZ bolt action?

I know I want one...... trying to justify/rationalize

My best guess would be the CZ.
Even if you needed to send it to a gunsmith with $200 for an "action job" and glassing, it would be a fairly inexpensive way to go.
I doubt you could go less with another rifle by converting it to a 404.


How about it guys........anyone know something I don't?

The Safari Custom is already glass bedded and dual crossbolted, but yeah you may still need to send it to a gunsmith. I ordered a CZ 550 375 H&H American Safari Magnum, but added to the list: action job, glass bedding, Pachmayer decelerator recoil pad, and dual crossbolts. It came in, the action job wasn't done, and there was only one swivel stud installed as well as another problem. Now this wasn't a Classic, but it was done by the same CZ Custom shop. I had it sent back, they're doing the action job, adding a barrel band and an upgraded stock as well as cycling rounds through it and test firing it before I receive it. I did not expect it to be right the first time around. I do expect it to be a really nice rifle when I get it, and an even better one when I send it to Ed Plummer to have the safety replaced with a 3 position Model 70ish, safety, bolt filled and straightened and a non set trigger installed. Still all told, I'm under $2500 for a stunning rifle that should be in good shape for a dangerous game hunt. The stock was absolutely gorgeous, and it is on a full length magnum action. CZ's tend to be heavy, but I don't mind carrying a couple of pounds extra if it's nicer to shoot at the range. I like to shoot my rifles a minimum of 500 rounds a year.

So end of story, I still think CZ is a good way to go, but you need to have patience and be persistent. Sportsman's Warehouse in Colorado Springs has been absolutely superb working with the CZ Custom Shop on this for me, I never got upset, just made sure they're making everything right (and giving me a discount for my trouble).

Thanks for sharing your experience..... not sure I have your good natured approach to something I paid $2,500 for and need to spend more $$ and time to get what I originally ordered and paid for!!

To All: Can the 404 Jeffery be done by a simple rebarrel of a Ruger RSM 375/416/458 Lott?

Well when I'm all done, I'll have about $2100 into it without scope. I started out with a regular Safari Magnum and upgraded it including the stock. I knew I had time to get it right. I'll post pictures once it's all done and have shot some groups with it.
