Correct stance with a double rifle
      #9603 - 20/02/04 01:54 PM

I tend to shoot my double the same way I shoot with a side by side shotgun, which isn't the way everyone else does it. I am self taught and it works for me.

Right hand and right eyed shooter.

Left leg for forward, foot pointed forward slightly to the right. Left knee slightly bent but leg pretty straight afterwise.

I lean forward into the shot. With a shottie I found my scores at clays improved when I did this.

Right leg extended, knee only slightly bent perhaps with the heel off the ground.

Left arm holds the barrels/stock in an open grip. Not too tight.

Right arm with the elbow extended at a right angle to the body - ie check out my profile picture.

Of course in the field all sorts of difference stances might be necessary in the heat of the moment. The above stance is the one I naturally take for an off-hand shot with a double.

With a bolt action I tend to bring my right elbow more into my body and "tuck" it in, to steady the shot. Same for the left elbow. For accuracy bring the elbow under the barrel more. I guess for a snapshot with the double I would naturally go into the shotgun stance but for an well aimed shot bring the elbows in.

Any comments on this stance or improvements?

I'm also right-handed with a right master eye. My way of shooting is with the stock firmly pulled into my shoulder pocket with my right elbow down. I find that with the elbow down, it tends to lock the butt into the shoulder pocket without slippage. Of course, the left leg is also forward and the right is almost straight. Both of my legs are really flexed and I am slightly on the balls of my feet. If you get a chance to watch military or police tactical shooters go about their training, you'll notice that the shooting hand side elbow is also down. I'm also leaning into the gun and target so my center is slightly forward. This really helps when I have to do qualifications shotguns also.

I have no style, I just throw the gun to my shoulder and shoot the minute the sights line up...I do practice this from most all awkward positions as thats what happens in the field with dangerous game...Everything I do is geared to field shooting..I even practice on stright away clays with a double rifle from time to time, but have not done that for several years..At one time I could hit about two or three out of five and the misses were darn close, but out present range isn't friendly to this and as a result I cannot do that anymore as it is something you must practice all the time to maintain that ability...It is strictly point shooting.

Ray, you probably have to burn up a bunch of ammo to get that good.

I think the right elbow out may not be correct. It probably works well with a shotgun where swing is important and accuracy is not. With a double rifle as has been suggested the elbow should be tucked in for a steadier shot.

Shooting clays with a double rifle - Ray youre not shooting shot down your double by any chance . But wow, if youre hitting a clay with a bullet.

I do it two ways. If it is a close shot or moving I shoot like I do with a shotgun. Longer shots...I tuck my left elbow in to steady the rifle a bit more. The way I shoot, neither way works wonders...

You know what, there really isn't a correct stance. It's just there is a better stance for handling recoil. I've often seen dudes standing incorrectly in that they are square to the target and not bladed instead. When they touch one off, they go back at least 4-6 steps and almost fall on their ass. Same with the position of the head, without proper stock and cheek weld your head is going back and forth like the bob-n-head doll.

475 Guy,
Actually it comes pretty quick, strictly point shooting and stright away of course and allow for rise and be sure you have a backdrop....but one must practice all the time to get two out of 5....It is costly and impracticle. Better to jump shoot jackrabbits at varied ranges.

Ray, I hear you. It's just that here in lala land, it's takes 3-5 hours drive to go somewhere isolated enough to do just that.
