New Searcy 450/400 PH Model
      #95182 - 26/01/08 02:03 AM

Well after a painful wait, I finally received my new Searcy 450/400 PH model. Fit, finish and detail is well above expectations (I asked Butch to spend a little extra time making it right). I haven't taken it to range yet (just arrived last night), but it will be going today. I am remiss for not taking photos, but I will post them over the weekend. It is equipped with the Talley QD mounts and a Leupold 1.5x5. I had it regulated for the non-Hornady load since I plan to shoot the "Woodleigh" loads orginally used by Butch.

Based on the Fed-Ex scale I used last night, it weighs in at just over 9 lbs (9 lbs 2 oz to be exact). I took some measurements and the LOP over the pad to the front trigger is just over 14 1/4". I am a short guy (5'6") but was curious as to your LOP compared to your height? It seems a little short, but I might just be crawling up the stock a little too far. Just curious....

I'm a hair under 6' and my LOP for my double is 14.5".

If you start whacking your nose while shooting it, the LOP is probably too short.

Same as Clark. I used to be 6 ft ( ), but have shrunk nearly an inch over the years, and my optimum LOP is about 14 1/4 inches.

How you mount the firearm is critical. I have a short neck and shoot heavy DRs with the butt-pad on my pec, but many shooters place the butt-pad back in the shoulder-pocket and stand a little side-on to the target. Big difference in LOP.

Reminds me of a story:
Mate's girl-friend wanted a shot out of my AH 20/.577 double. Insisted, in fact. She normally hunted pigs with her own Win 94 .44-40, and didn't want to look sissy in front of the boys. To my horror, she mounted the steel buttplate out on her arm some 2 inches from the shoulder-joint! I tried to get her to mount on the shoulder, but she wanted to do it her way! Insisted, once again! Well, the first shot ripped that buttplate down the inside of her upper arm, with obviously painful consequences. Tough lady: she insisted on the second barrel, and mounted it exactly the same way!

I saw the ugly purple and yellow bruise 2 days later, at which point she admitted to being perhaps a little hard-headed!

Yes.... But I will need some help posting the pics. I have nowhere to "host" them per the instructions.

As for the range report, well it is a two part report.

Part 1: After a few rounds of getting used to the rifle, and the beginnings of some good groups, the grouping went to crap. After sending the rifle back to Butch, it was determined the rib had come loose. Oops...... Butch was not happy and somewhat embarrassed by this occurrence.

Part 2: The rifle now shoots like a dream. Getting great groups with the open sights (2"), but my wiggle factor is obviously present. With the scope, I can get sub 2" groups offhand. From my standing rest, it shoots as well as my .375.

What I can't get over is the recoil. This thing is a pussy cat. I have shot 20 rounds in less than 15 minutes and it is no problem at all...

If someone will send me an email address, I will gladly send you the photos for uploading assistance. Sorry for the delay.

This is disappointing to hear, but it's not the first time guys

have had new rifles shipped to them from this maker with

immediate issues to be corrected. I hope you are the last

person to spend twelve thousand or more dollars for a brand

new rifle and then have a problem "right off" to ruin your

enjoyment, at least temporarily, of it.

I know nothing about double & have never shot one. I have handled a few & even used one on a beat shoot in India but never fired it.

To my untrained eyes, the Searcy looks verymuch like the British doubles. How does it compare in quality with the European makes like Merkel, etc? I am interested in people's views about the ranking of the various European makers & the Searcy.

Big Five,

I agree and was disappointed with the issue. However, I am quite pleased with the rifle now, and Butch has taken it upon himself to ensure I am happy with the rifle. Which I am...

Bwana Nelson,

I went with the non-Hornady load because I really like the Woodleigh bullets. I have located a great source for loads, so I am actually buying loads from a custom loader in Dallas. He is quite a bit cheaper (50%+) than his competition (Superior, Ultimate, etc..) for the same loads. Thus, I am getting my loads for almost factory Hornady pricing. I am quite pleased with his loads and his attention to detail is phenominal.

If anyone wants his information, please feel free to send me a message. He is loading up a couple hundred rounds of 450/400 for me along with some of the heavy 350 gr. .375 Woodleighs for my upcoming trip to Moz/Zim.

Glad you like your rifle. So glad everything worked out. Your Double is stunning-beautiful.

I will freely admit that I am somewhat gunshy of Butch and purchasing his rifles after reading about his product for many years here on NE. Sounds like its getting better but he still seems to have some real QC issues to solve vs his competition.

Where are you going in Moz?? I am talking to a few different people.

You must thank heavens that the rib came loose in Texas and not in Mozambique...

DDouble,

I am going to Moz to hunt buffalo and croc with JP Kleinhans on his concession near Beira. The place is named Mahimba.
