Best .375 H&H load for plains game?

I would like some info on what .375 load you would use on the big plains game.
I may be going in a safari in Namiba or SA for plains gsme like Kudu, Eland, Zebra, and Roan, as well as the little guys like tommys, steenbok, duiker, and warthog.

The rifle I have is a Remington Model 700 African with a Leupold 2.5-9 VX-II scope.

For 8 safaris in Zimbabwe I have used 260 gr Nosler Partitions over IMR4350 with complete success. Use the powder charge that shoots best in your rifle, for me that was under full charge by several grains. My Model 70 custom shot a .70 group of 20 rounds fired as fast as you normally would shoot and reload. The gun has a laminate stock and holds 2 rounds down with one in chamber for 3 rounds. It's a stainless classic. I have used this gun and load on everything from duiker to Eland with complete success many more than one times.

I was going to suggest the 270 grain loads, but there is nothing wrong with zimhunter's suggestion. The thinking being that you want a little more velocity than you would get with the 300gr if you are in more open country like parts of Namibia. Eland and zebra are very tough, but a 270 grain .375 would be perfect IMHO, although you won't get much expansion on the duiker!

By the way, where are you going to find tommys?

OHhunter:

I have been on several Plains-game safaris with my Rem Model 700 Classic in .375 H&H. I don't reload, so I have to buy off-the-shelf. In my opinion, it's tough to beat a box of Remington Safari Grade with 300 grain Swift A-frames. All of my animals were one shot kills with this cartridge. This includes everything from Giraffe and Eland down to Impala.

I used my 375 on my last several trips to southern Africa, and shot Barnes 270 grain loadings on everything from Steenbuck up to Blue Wildebeest, Burchell Zebra, Mt.Zebra and Giraffe. All were one shot kills.

Could you tell us mike at what speed you load the 270gr Barnes?

Based on the game you are hunting and where you plan to hunt them -Namibia.(where shots tend to be longer) -- I agree with the above and go with a 270 gr bullet..one of tougher design like a Barnes Triple or Swift A-Frame loaded--have used them both in my Sako and they shoot well..also in the smaller stuff--duiker, etc..I have shot them and not entirely messed up the cape for mounting later..-if you are stuck on the .375..

Personally having been there myself--If I was just hunting plains game I might consider taking a bigger flat shooting caliber like a 338 Ultra-mag with 250 gr bullets...
