Hi, I posted this before on the single shot forum, can any gunsmiths offer advice ? thx, Mike.

Morning all, amongst other projects, I currently have a USA custom gunsmith building me a single shot in .30-06 on a Martini Hagn action. My question is about stocking. My shotguns are stocked to my measurements and I understand I am going to have to change some measurements as this will primarily be a scoped rifle. My question regards LOP, it seems ridiculously short in some US made rifles. My LOP in double shotguns is 14 7/8ths". I was going to go with 14 1/4 on the rifle, any thoughts ? BTW, my other measurements are
cast off 1/4
drop to comb 1 3/8ths
drop to heel 2 3/8ths
any thoughts on what these measurements should be for a scoped rifle (with lowish mounts)
thanks in advance, Mike

My Krieghoff O/U double rifle, which was stocked to accomodate both iron sights and a low mounted scope, measures 14 1/2"X 1 1/4"X 2 1/4" with 1/4" cast off. I copied those measurements from my Perazzi Skeet I shotgun and they work perfectly for me.

If your going to use a low profile mount, I would suggest stocking it: 14 1/2 x 1 1/8 x 2

If your using a pad make certain to use a thin 1/2" pad and cover it with burgundy pigskin. So you would have the stock cut to 14" in this case, to accommodate the pad width of 1/2".

Hagn actioned rifles deserve pigskin pads.

I would have chosen a 300 ultra chambering though over a 30-06.

Will it have iron sights?

You say, "this will primarily be a scoped rifle". Assuming that open sights are part of the mix, you might want to consider stocking the gun to your 'shotgun' dimensions, but based on the sight line through the open sights as compared to sighting down the rib on a shotgun. You will probably want to leave a little extra wood on the comb, and toe line, in the event you desire or need to adjust from the noted dimensions. You then just live with the lower comb when using the scope sight. This will allow you to use the gun as a stalking type rifle when the open sights are used.

Typically, rifles are stocked shorter than shotguns by approximately 1/2" to 3/4". However, it is a personal thing and I would recommend that you have it stocked long, and then cut it shorter if you find it uncomfortable or unwieldy.

You sure can use your shotgun dimensions, but in a slightly different way...

Sinner, I have a .375 double on order so I don't need an ultra .300. For some reason I don't like leather covered butt pads either, I prefer a skeleton colour case hardened checkered butt plate which is what is going on this. I have the same on my Bosis 12 bore and I think it looks very good. I am negotiating on a .470 at the moment which I guess I will have to have fitted with a leather covered pad but I don't think it is the most elegant solution, thanks for all the input chaps, rgds, Mike
