One of a Kind.

Picked up this 1985 Remington left hand "C" grade .264 Winchester. Will make a nice Varmint,Deer,Elk rifle to replace my 1980 7mm lefty I'm having converted to a custom .375 H&H. Yes, I still have my doubles, but a man needs a nice bolt gun or two!

Never owned a .264 Win, but one of its cousins {6.5x55} is a "staple" around the ranch here. Actually, three of them, all Rugers.

Any friend of ".264/6.5" is a friend of mine!

I'm going to try it out today with those really long Hornady 160 pills. This is going to be a big game hunting rifle and I'll be satisfied with 2-3" at 200 yards.

If you don't mind you have to let me know what you are using for loads--I am tinkering with a .264 myself.. and have been using 129 and 140 gr bullets--it is currently shooting about 3/4 inch at a 100 but I plan for it to do better..

I also recently purchased a 6.5/284 in a Target Savage for 1000 yd comp. this summer... have wanted to do this for a very long time. As the Savage is not very expensive I thought this would be a good place to start and if I liked it I upgrade from there..

Today was just to get in on paper at 100 yards.

My starting load was 54gr (10% less than max) H1000 and it printed 2.4" 5 shot group dead center. I'll increase a grain at a time. The 160s are not noted for being super accurate, but very deadly. My goal is 3" at 200 yards. I also have some 155gr Lapua Mega I've yet to try.

This is a hunting rifle first and foremost, but it also has to look classic; it has to look good. I can't stand an ugly firearm.

I'm a big fan of the 6.5 cal. I owned 2 6.5X55 Swed rifles - a Sako & a Winchester Mod70. I now own 2 Mannlicher-Schouenauers in 6.5X54MS. I have taken a few red & fallow deer with them and have always been pleased with 1 shot kills.

I personally believe that the 140gr should be the minimum in a 6.5 to take advantage of the faster twist. You should get 2800 fps with a 160gr Hornady RN in the 264 Win Mag. If you went to a Spire point 160gr or a Barnes 150gr TSX, you are fine out to 400 yds for elk.

Ballistically, the 6.5x68 is almost a ringer for the 264 WM.
; My buddy uses his 6.5x68 for moose here, locally, and has become fond of the 120gr. "XLC". On a butt-shot at 304 lazerd yards, the bullet hit just left and low of the "0", and was found with only one petal left, in the skin of the brisket. The Moose braced her feet at impact for a couple seconds, then dropped. Muzzle velocity was 3,325fps.
; In my daughter's .260 CLC, I obtained 3/8" to 5/8" accuracy with the same 120gr. XLC with 52gr. RE#19 powder at 3,008fps, but never shot anything with it before setting the barrel back to take normal .260 Rem.

Wow!

What difference changing powder makes. Changing from H1000 to IMR4831 meant going from 2.4" to MOA with a 160 RN. I love this rifle already.

Don't overlook IMR 7828. A superb .264 powder. Very cool burning as well.

This .264 Win. LH R700 rifle cleanly killed a whitetale buck Saturday with a 160 gr. Hornady so fast it was dead before he hit the ground. The bullet broke down both shoulders, burst the heart and exited the opposite side.

What's your MV with that load?
The 160gr Hornady is a great bullet.
I'd been working on some loads for my Jeffery last year right around this time, and figured I'd see how it did on water-filled pumpkins.

I think it was four or five pumpkins blown to bits, the bullet sitting in the back side (only part standing) of the last one, shot at 75 yards.
Quite a hoot.
The spray was spectacular, and that was just the wee little 6.5x53r and the soft Hornady bullet!
I have some vintage solids, perhaps I'll gather some of these Halloween pumpkins and do a repeat with a longer string of pumpkins and a solid!

I've shot a few deer with the 160 Hornady in the 6.5x55. Worked well. OK bullet. Maybe a bit frangible and not the deep penetrator its weight implies. Based on my media testing, I'd call it a fairly "soft" bullet. Maybe tops for the 6.5 JAP, 6.5 Carcano, 6.5x54 and 6.5x53R and reaching its velocity ceiling for deep penetration in a strong-action 6.5x55 Swede.

Not surprised to hear it worked well on a side shot on a whitetail in the .264. Should be a real killer of a bomb on such shots even from that fast one.

Bonanza, do you know the weight of that deer?

Have been using mine as well for different species...the 6.5 is truly a great caliber for deer or even elk...amazing balistics..not sure why it never seems to catch on much here in the US...

True US-wide.

Here I don't know of many .264 Win's, but many years ago in the first wave of milsurp imports the 6.5 Swede gained a surprisingly large following. Maybe due at first to the cheapness of the guns, then later because they work, just as you say. The 6.5x55 has a very good reputation here and many guns are used each year for deer and elk, mostly sporterized Swede Mausers. Then in the '90's another wave of the sporter Swedes came thru and again many were sold locally. It is funny. Most Euro calibers are unknown around here, but mention the 6.5 Swede in any bar or restaurant and it'll get kudos by a good portion of the crowd!

I got rid of my 96 Mausers a while back, but still use the 6.5x55 in my Rugers. My youngest shot her first deer with one just a bit over a week ago.

I have Woodleigh 160s, but wanted to use the Hornady because it was softer. I'm saving the Woodleighs for tougher game than a 120Lbs whitetale. The Hornady still went through like butter.

My Load is 65gr of H1000 for about 3000 fps.

Bonanza, do both those bullets shoot to same POI in your .264?

That would be handy.

BTW: What kind of accuracy did you finally get with the rifle/load?

I'm still breaking in the barrel and will file lap it next. It's shooting 1.3" with the Hornady RN and I expect to get MOA or better with the Woodleighs or varmit bullets.

How come? Some groove/fit issue or something else?

I've found the Hornady RN's to be some of the most accurate hunting bullets I've ever shot; 160/6.5, 180/.308, 220/.308 and 300/.375 all of them are really superb. No RN is going to be a real long range performer, but for accuracy they are super.

Also, probably like the Woodleigh, the 160 Hornady tho heavy is shorter than a lot of the 140's, and might like the slow twist {1/10, I think the Rem has} of the .264 barrel. I've read {anybody verify?} that twist issues hurt the .264 with some of the longer bullets, tho it seems to me the high velocity obtainable might mitigate this.

I'm curious about your .264 as I really like the 6.5 caliber and have a spot on my place here where the skies the limit range-wise and deer pop up at anywhere from the muzzle to a knoll 500 yards away. Have mulled over a high speed 6.5 for a long time.
