.375 H&H Ackley

A couple of years ago I had a very accurate Winchester Classic Stainless rechambered from .375 H&H to .375 Ackley Improved. It is still very accurate, keeping all of my selected loads @3/4" at 100 yards. I was surprised though that I didn't get the velocity increase I thought I would. In order to maintain accuracy, I only picked up around 75 fps. Has anyone else done this conversion, and if so, what did you pick up in velocity?

I've not done the conversion but a friend of mine did and reported similar results as you have realised.

I'd be interested in knowing if you have noticed any reduction in case stretch with the AI chamber. Do you have to trim as often as with the traditional H&H case?

This has been the same complaint about the 30-06 AI all along, also.

I'm curious, is this slight velocity increase with 270 gr and with 300 gr bullets, or did one "improve" more than the other?

I have minimal case stretch. I didn't experience excessive stretch in its original H&H form either.

The 75 fps gain was with the 250 grain Swift A-frame loads. With my 300 grain loads, I only gained @ 55 fps. If I had it to do over again, I doubt I'd do the conversion. When my P.H.s have seen the Ackley round though, they get all excited. It really turned them on. Fortunately, I've shot well with it, so they all think the caliber kills like lightning.

I recently saw a very sweet Rifle chambered in 375 H&H HG Baucher Improved. Any one ever hear of that before ? I looked in "Cartridges of the World" But I found no reference.

Have never heard of it. Around 1970 a local gunsmith tried to improve the 375 like a Brown Whalen, and pushed the shoulder forward a bit. It gained a slight bit over the Weatherby/Aclkey improved concept with 270's, but gained nothing with 300's except loss of accuracy...300's had to be seated so darned deep with that shortened neck that no real powder weight increase was achieved, at least nothing that made much difference.

I would be interested to know what anyone thinks could be done to improve over the slight edge of the Weatherby or AI, and how it works.

Thanx for the info. I have not been able to find out much about this one so I am going to pass on it. It was at Lewis Drake I think on Page seven. I fell in love with the wood on that one. What I really wanted was the 243 just below it for $850 !!!!
