Where are all the Vintage English Doubles??
      #92684 - 26/12/07 07:10 PM

Just out of curiousity I was wondering where a Brit or a fellow from the UK would sell a Double rifle.Their laws are so strict now I don't know if Doubles would even be allowed in the UK presently.

Dunno where most of the guns are, but obviously a large percentage are in Australia and the States.

If any of our members are knowledgible they could speak up.

Betcha Sinner may have a sizable portion of the Best English ones in his gunsafes, for sure!!

I suppose you are correct in your assessment as to there being a large number of vintage English guns in the US and Oz. A good vintage rifle might turn up anywhere though, and when it does and if you are able to buy it, you are indeed a very lucky man.

There is no restriction in owning a double in the UK, you just have to prove that you have somewhere to shoot it ie are a hunter, or member of a range which permits big calibers.

Heck I can even own calibers that are banned in the proples republic of california :-)
and import that deadly 98 mauser with a thumb cut and clip loader rail that you BATF will not let me send to you.

Regards

India still has English Doubles hidden away in private / family "collections". I know of a Mantons 470 & a pair of Wesley Richards 476 & 280. I have seen & handled these rifles. I have heard of several others. Even more bolt rifles are poping us as there is little opportunity to use them now. Regading fine shotguns, it is surprising how many come up in remote villages in terrible condition. I have seen Woodward & H&H with broken stocks, pitted barrels & village people using black powder (read blasting powder). These are probably guns used by British offices before independance & either sold or presented to local people. The Tea Plantation industry had some fine shotguns that were left behind by the British planters. Some old planters used to present their firearms to their young successors. This was a common tradition until the 1960's. A few good guns are still around. A large number of old firearms is with the movie industry in India. Some of these were "deactivated" by the authorities while others were stamped with new ID numbers etc. I know of an H&H which went down that track.

Sinner,
I think you may have missed one or two, maybe.

Sinner -
You are blessed to say the least!!

If a local were going to sell a Double in England, what specific steps would they have to take and what qualifications would the buyer have to demonstrate, if any?

Would this restrict rifle sales to within the country??

Would Doubles just be sold out of various gunshops or are any sold on the net or at auction in the UK??

Just curious--

You only need to discuss export with a dealer that specializes in import/export. Champlin Arms, British Sporting Arms, and Cabelas are all good at this process. They do charge a fee, though this is the safest way to do it without alot of hassles.

No.

Not certain what your trying to say here. Guns are sold through gunshops, the internet, through private auctions, and private sales between individuals.

Doubles are certainly allowed in the UK. The chief constable (head of police) of the county must give his approval (signature) to the individual owning any firearms. This is done through his firearms department. To get approval you must prove valid reason to own and use a firearms in any calibre. In most cases this involves proving you have suitable land and quarry for the rifle, be this land you own and suitable quarry for the calibre in question; or you rent/have permission to use the land and have suitible quarry for the calibre; or you can prove you have an invitation (commercial or private) to shoot a suitable quarry for calibre either in the UK or abroad.

If no valid reason is given, or your reason is not deemed to be good enough by the police, they will refuse you application for a firearm. I know enough people who have doubles. Most are of old title families with large estates and/or land abroad. The others I know of are generally people with money and time to spend in Africa; or those close to the gun trade with the passion for Africa.

Oh to have the freedom of America's firearm laws!

So very, very true...

But I fear we will,

in coming decades, lose

much of our gun owning

options.
