Christmas Echoes
      #92566 - 24/12/07 10:30 PM

Sitting yet another Saturday morning out on a driven hunt – high just beneath the snowy mountain peaks. It is cold and the sun is rising slowly. Valley is far down in the fog – still sleeping. Sound of a lonely hound is distant but coming closer.
I can hear them now - many steps breaking the snow – they are coming. Shot cracks on my right and steps turn behind the ridge, rising up the slope – away from me.
But - behold – they are turning left – now I can see them high underneath the rocks – 20 or more of them passing the gully – guys above begin to deliver, echo of shots rise and fall on the mountain slopes – suddenly it is all over...not quite - lonely steps coming down - there he is broken hind leg makes his run staggering. I am following him over open sights on my Merkel – now he is parallel - bright red covers his chests and at the bang he stops – still up – fast another one – he is still up – fast reload – aim at the base of the neck – hesitating he lays down in the cold snowy bed.

Wish You NE guys and all Yours a Merry Christmas and all the best in the coming year.

Nice job Mouse; particularly since you made up for somebody else's mistake and anchored a critter that otherwise might have been left for the crows. That IS a good feeling!

What gun was the other fellow shooting, do you know?

Mouse:

Curious to know...There in Slovenia, who's animal is that? The guy that hit it first or the guy that stopped it {you}?

I assume when you are called in to follow up an animal wounded by another hunter, if you collect the animal, it is the property of the fellow that first shot it...is that correct?

Do you use your dogs for a fee? Can you explain the system there as to who gets trophy and meat?

What was the other fellow shooting?

Thanks for another great account.

Now that is a double rifle trophy of a difference!

What a fantastic trophy moufflon too.

And Solvenia is indeed a beautiful country too from your many photos you share with us.

Game taken with bullet the animal belongs to the guy that hit it first, with game taken with shot the animal belongs to the last guy. It relates to the trailed game with dogs as well. that goes for trophy since meat belongs to the hunting ground (what comes from the woods goes back to the woods).

The other fellow was shooting a bolt rifle with (to me) unknown caliber (my guess would be something in .30 cal, 7 or 6,5 mm).

I used to track for a fee in my student days (up to 90 trackings/year) but now I have job to do, also kids/family demand time, so I do it just for myself or my friends for free (~ 20 trackings/year). It is a good stuff to stay in shape, make new friends and get some invitations to other hunting grounds.
