My CZ 550 American Safari Magnum in 375 H&H should be here in a few more weeks. I was thinking of sending it to Ed Plummer for a bit of work. It's going to be butt cold here for about 3 months so it's a good time to get the work done. He offers a package where he straightens and fills the bolt handle, puts on a Mauser 3-position safety, and replaces the trigger. I was thinking of keeping the set trigger however. Any advice?

Unless you're used to the set trigger, I'd replace it, especially in a big game rifle like the 375. I like the idea of the 3 position safety, and straightening the bolt handle.

Personally, I hate set triggers but the CZ trigger could be used as a normal trigger without the extremely high trigger pull that most set triggers need if not cocked. The triggers I have tried on CZ rifles where ok, so just test it and decide.
The CZ safetys are very bad in my opinion because they work the other way around, if You pull the safety back the gun is ready to fire, if You push it forward it is on safe. Unless You use this type of safety exclusively You should change it for obvious reasons !

Thanks all! Once I receive the gun and make sure it's in good working order and put a box of shells through it, I'll probably send it out if Ed can get the job done before April.

That only applied to the Bruno 602 actions. Not correct for the CZ 550 ; it is now conventional - forward - fire; back - safe.

In February 1970 I was living in Germany and accepted an invitation to join a group of German hunters going to Bulgaria for wild boar shooting.
In preparation for the trip I ordered a ZKK 602 BRNO rifle in .375 H&H Magnum caliber from Waffen Frankonia, and had the barrel shortened to 22" and the front sight relocated. I also fitted it with a 2 1/2 power Lyman All American scope. The only thing which really concerned me about the rifle was the safety, which worked backwards. Forward was safe, rearwards was ready to fire. Finally, I tried thinking of it as a Winchester lever action, with the safety lever like the exposed hammer.
When I finally got on stand with the rifle, waiting for the anticipated "Hauptschwein" to appear, I decided that I should go ahead and release the safety so there would be no fumbling at the critical moment. You know in advance what happened. Two yearlings ("Ueberlaeufer") showed up in front of me. I threw the gun up to my shoulder and PUT THE SAFETY BACK ON.
It pays to hunt with a gun you are thoroughly familiar with and know how to handle instinctively. In this instance, I missed an easy shot at a game animal. If my life had been on the line, it would have been all over.
I still have the rifle, but it is now equipped with a three position safety like that on a Model 70 Winchester.

I'd rather get a M70 3-position safety for your rifle. A friend of mine had one istalled on his custom-model 602. He's very satisfied!

I have the CZ American Safari 458 Lott and the trigger pull is 2.5 lbs not using the set trigger. Using the set trigger it is 1.5 lbs. There four I don't use the set trigger. The trigger seams alright not using the set trigger.

I have this rifle in 416 Rigby and like it very much
Suggest you 1)have it properly bedded or stock will crack
2)change to 3 position safety or it can be rendered "safety on" by accident when manipulating the bolt quickly
3)leave the trigger as a (properly adjusted)set trigger-I find it a great help when taking a careful slow
shot with a big rifle,they go off before you have time to flinch!

Last year I bought a 3-pos-safety for a friends CZ-550 Magnum. It is an already american-made part made by Dave Gentry on a very high quality standard that works very fine on that rifle. It was blued and fitted to the rifle with ease by a local gunsmith...

i have a 404 CZ that ed plummer amd AHR did those things and many other things and I think you will be very happy sending your rifle to ED. He will also look it over and give you his opionion on barrell, wood etc. Well worth the $ spent.

Now that I have one of these rifles I wonder what is so bad about the current three-position CZ safety?

I sent my rifle to Ed yesterday, should have it back in a month. You're right ThreeXFifty7, the original safety is like the one on my .270 700 BDL, nothing wrong with it. I don't like the set trigger, but used normally it's fine, and the bolt handle doesn't hit my knuckle or anything. It's primarily for aesthetics (want it to look like that Empire bolt gun on Terry's book cover), I'll post a picture when it's done. I plan to have Ed rebarrel it to 470 Capstick next winter. This is probably my last new rifle so I want to spoil myself a bit, but it will be a working rifle. I plan to hunt elk, deer and bear with it this fall, hopefully Africa the year after that.
