J.P. Sauer, What have I got?
      #91303 - 12/12/07 04:22 AM

I recently picked up this J.P. Sauer "Oberndorf Mauser". I was looking for a classic styled rifle but I don't know much about them. I was hoping someone could give me some information on it. According to articles by Jeff Stephens in the fall and winter 2004 issues of Double Gun Journal #206010 would have been made around 1912. Does anyone know if Jeff is still collecting serial and mauser numbers to establish Sauer manufacture dates? It is an 8x57 with the .318 bore, swaging and reloading dies came with it. It has the half octagon/half round barrel and a full rib. I was surprised at how light it is, 7 lbs even with the thin leather sling. Is that the usual weight for this type of rifle? It has been drilled and tapped for scope mounting and from the pictures on this site it looks like the bolt handle has been replaced. Other than that it looks original to me. Most of the rifles like this I have seen on the internet have set triggers, but this has a two stage trigger. I plan to have it reblued, would the proper type be rust or hot blue. Are there other pictures of the rifle that would help? Thank you for any comments, good or bad.

Bob you have a very nice rifle and if it were mine I don't think I would reblue it.

bob,is the reciever tapped ,the bolt handle does not look like typical j.p.sauer ,i do like the single trigger which is a a little unusual on a german gun , could you post a closeup of the bolt handle ,if it is original then i would not reblue ,if it has been changed ir could be changed back then reblue ,all in all rebluing wont bring any more for a sale then if you left it alone ...paul

Nice! I've got one much like it. My first Mauser (not counting the junk Israeli 308 I bought!). Looks like the J/A who drilled and tapped it for a scope, bent the bolt handle too. I wouldn't be surprised if the trigger was a replacement, too. Its hard to tell what condition the blue is in but the wood looks pretty fair. Mine was the same except very dirty. My gunsmith lightly cleaned the wood and rubbed a couple of coats of fresh oil on it and then dropped the action in the ultrasonic tank. WOW! What a difference!!! It looked great!!! No need for any reblueing. The finish on the rifles is so fine that it looks like there's wear when there is none. The other thing to note is that there are several different finishing techniques (rust, nitre blue, straw blue, case color) used on these rifles and unless you're going to do a full restoration, the reblued jobs stand out a mile away- ugh!
They are lightweight and that's what makes them so sweet. However, the stock panels are there for a reason- to reinforce the wood in that area. Its not uncommon for the stocks to break or crack on these. They handle great but can be a bit sharp under recoil. Neat rifle, eh?? That .318 bore/8x57J is a pain, though, isn't it??!

Thanks for the replies, guys. From the look of the bolt handle it has been welded on. It has also been drilled and tapped. It is was all original I might have considered a full restoration, but I plan to hunt it. From the look of the rifle it has been carried alot more than it has been shot. The floor plate and bottom of the trigger guard are grey, and there is some bluing loss between the rear sight and receiver. I haven't shot it yet, its been 30 below around here since I got it. I like A10ACN's method of cleaning it up before deciding on the reblue job. If I like it after shooting I'm not worried about resale as I would keep it. I think for now I'll clean it up, strengthen the wood a bit with some crazy glue, and see how I shoot with it. The .318 bore is a pain and I haven't found anyone that sells that diameter bullet in Canada. I've got a swaging press on the way and I hope to find some light loads that are easy on both me and the wood. It is a cool gun though.
